What are your belief(s) on the Soul/Spirit?

Personally, I do believe in the existence of the spirit. As a student of Psychology, I am a firm believer of the existence of spirit. The majority of psychologists believe in the soul in one form or another. (Such as Abraham Maslow, and many others) So, what are your views?

  • I say there might be one. But its far beyond our comprehension or grasp. Its not simple energy or brain activity or whatever. Nor is it simply grasped by science or religion.

  • If energy cannot be created nor destroyed, and every living thing has Life energy, where does that energy go when one dies? Could it be a soul or spirit or ghost? Maybe? Who knows...

  • You have an inner soul, and your body is the temple. You must keep yourself in shape to keep the spirit within balanced and bright. Damaging the temple which contains the spirit harms your inner self.

  • I think that science has yet to explain what makes us different from the other animals on this planet. To our knowledge we are the only self aware species. We are certainly the only ones that do what we do (science, religion, cities etc...) Now, I will not say that the difference is the soul. But I will say that its a possibility. Now, before you theists start jumping for joy and yelling you got one, you haven't. Its a poorly understood concept, and the possibility of a soul does not equate to a deity living in the sky judging our actions. If, and that's a mighty big IF, there is something other than a chemical mixture powering the old batteries, we haven't found it, or even seen evidence. I will say there is a reasonable doubt on the existence of a soul, and not enough evidence to convict...yet.

No, unless by 'soul' you mean the mental manifestation of consciousness. I frankly find a metaphysical soul to be hard to believe, simply because personality can be so easily be altered through physical means. I've personally seen how medication can drastically affect emotion, how head injuries can completely warp how a person thinks, or how just emotional trauma alone can effectively program new behaviours into a person. The idea that someone has a consistant, everlasting soul just doesn't fit into that picture very well.

  • Nah, I don't believe in the 'soul' in any metaphysical sense, that's silly.

  • It's nonsense. The neurological/biological mechanisms in my body are sufficient to produce what humans classify as "consciousness," there's no need for the addition of some trans-dimensional life force that uses our body as a husk.

  • Soul as in a supernatural representation of ourselves? I believe it doesn't exist

  • I believe in the soul, something each of us has. As to where it came from or where it goes once our bodies perish in this world...well, your guess is as good as mine.

  • "Souls" as a supernatural phenomenon cannot be proven to exist. However, I find that the use of the word "soul" to refer to a human mind, with emphasis on the qualities that make that mind uniquely human, can be quite useful and even poetic.

    • Anyone who claims that they have hard core evidence for the existence of a soul are mistaken. However, that does not mean that you can't have an opinion on it. I believe that there is a soul that carries on into the afterlife.

    • Personally no. But truth is I don't know and no body does for that matter.
