Why is it now less attractive for a girl to be "girly"?

Something I noticed for the past few years, it seems like girls are drifting away from their "girly" activities (or at least making it appear that way) and trying to get into more guy-type activities. It almost seems like some girls rather be apart of the guys, rather than being with them as a companion. I constantly see pictures and statuses on socializing networks were a girl is displaying she prefers a typical guy interest over a typical girl interest, but why? Why is this something to be proud of? (It's nothing to be ashamed either, I'm not saying that. However I don't see it as this huge accomplishment to take pride in either.) Why is it cooler to say you rather hang with the guys than go to the mall with your girlfriends? Or watch the sports game rather than watch a romance movie? Or that you wear sneakers rather than heels? Or drink beer over coolers? Why do some girls feel the need to shout this out to the world, like it's this really attractive trait? I acknowledge that some males don't like girly-girls, but I'm sure most don't give a crap either. Actually, I wouldn't date someone based on their interests but who they are, and acting like you like something just to appear more attractive is being nothing but a mere poser. I'm not saying that all these girls are pretending either, but some of those girls I seen posting these types of statuses and bragging about how they watch the "hockey game" or "play videos", I can ensure you, they do very little to none at all. Again, I'm not saying that all females who say they like this stuff are faking it. Far from. I'm just curious as to why it needs to be announced so often, and why being into something "girly" makes you appear less attractive or "cool". So my question is here, since when did being "feminine" become unattractive? Also, do you guys really care if a girl got more guy interests than girl interests? EDIT: This thread isn't about gender roles and how they're changing. There is nothing wrong with a female being into a guy-thing nor a male being into a girl-thing. That ISN'T what this thread is about. I'm wondering why some girls broadcast how they prefer a male interest over a female interest, as if it's more appealing or attractive.

  • Girls with guy interests and that are girly, are awesome. Who doesn't love a hot girl playing a video game with you? I would love that. I'm not even that much of a gamer, anymore, but girls still could be girly and maybe have guy interests at the same time and there's nothing wrong with that. I love shopping and i'm a guy. I dress nicely and don't wear baggy things. Just because i'm a guy doesn't mean i can't dress nicely and sharp.

  • I've been with the same girl for the past year now and i've found that i prefer when she does girly things. I mean, i don't mind when we trys to play Halo with me, or when she wants to play a game of MTG. But i personally think it's more attractive when she wears nice dresses and sings Taylor Swift instead of most of the girls at my school who wear baggy clothing and yell at the top of their lungs while listening to Screamo.

        • I like girls that share my interests. Whether or not they wear a dress or blue jeans really isn't important to me. As for why some girls broadcast that they have what's considered "masculine" interests, ask them. I'm not a woman, and I don't do that, so how am I supposed to know?

        • If a girl watches sport, it means that we share a similar interest and can watch the match together. Similar interest= more attractive to me.

        • Girly are icky yo. They've got like, cooties and stuff. Best way to integrate with the male is to pretend to be one, and just like that one bug had hides it's larva in an ant den these girls will eventually mature into women and eat the hearts of the men who thought they were one of them. Nature is disgusting.

          • In any case, I don't really like girls that prefer masculine activities more. I like it maybe if they have some similar interests, but aesthetically, I do not like it when a girl dresses like a guy (really short hair, baggy pants, sneakers, etc).

Dude you are a girl...did you know this is a video game forum? I personally haven't noticed what you are talking about. But if it is as you say, ever think crazy things like in 10 years men will be getting their nails done while their lady works on their car?

            • It's not like that. Sometimes girls will act like they like manly activities to get the attention of guys. Lots of girls think its really attractive and that's probably the only reason they do it; the thing is, from what I've seen, it doesn't really work. Sometimes it may seem like that gets the girl the guy but if they did end up getting together its probably just coincidence anyway.

              • Gender roles are becoming a thing of the past as mainstream society recognizes more and more the true equality between men and women. Things that used to be considered the exclusive realm of men or women for no real reason are now being enjoyed by members of both sexes. It's a good thing.

                • Ones interests has a lot to do with the person they are, so it is fairly important. Though I haven't really noticed this trend, I mean yeah I see it, but it does not really dominate.

                • Maybe we're getting closer to a time where real gender equality exists -- so by default what society views proper for either gender is equal.

                  • different styles, different preferences, changing societal views. take your pick. honestly, i find many 'Girl Gamers' living in a circle of 'friends' (80% of the time all male) who treat them like queens. The thing is, they are still what i would consider 'girly' because of their speech patterns and the subjects in which they speak. i mean, 'girly' is rather subjective so what i consider 'girly' could be way different from your 'girly'. Not only that but does one 'manly' preference cancel out all 'girly' aspects of the female in question?

                  • It's a common stereotype in fiction these days to have a headstrong, stubborn and daring woman, and that is something like what many women in reality aspire to be. Unfortunate, really, considering those are traditionally masculine concepts and it's basically saying, 'No, women! You shouldn't be feminine! Men are better and you should aspire to be more like them!' It's a trope I hope to smash one day with my own writing.

                  • I don't mind a girl being "girly" as long as it's through innocence instead of trying to be something they're not. I actually find it attractive if a girl has both a girly side and an outgoing side that's different from the rest. Not to say they would ever be too girly because I would try to get them into fun shit that I like.

                  • I think this must be specific to your friends or maybe age range? I haven't seen any trend toward girls wanting to be less "girly." And who decides what's girly and what isn't anyway? What are "girl" interests? I like: books video games shoes sci-fi/fantasy sports beer wine board games clothes makeup camping What am I?

I would only date a person if they are truly that way, and not if they're being a fake and just putting on a show.
