I could agree with that, but you should also know that if you highlight text and press the "bold" button, it encloses the highlighted text in those tags. I believe that's the intended functionality.

Yeah, but it's easier to me the other way, and I can do it whilst I type, meaning I don't have to go back over my post at the end/after I posted something I want to edit to change it.
