I've been told multiple times that I don't look my weight, but still, I nearly shat myself when I stepped on a scale on Christmas Day to find that I weighed a whopping 268. I knew I had packed on the weight since my son was born, but jesus, fifty pounds?
So I got serious about getting back in shape. I've attempted to start a diet and exercise routine several times since I've gotten heavy, but it's ever only lasted a few days at a time. It's been over a month now, and I think I've finally made it a habit.
I try to take in less than 2000 calories a day, some days even coming in with a net calorie intake of ~1000, but usually only when I exercise that day. I downloaded a popular fitness app on my phone that's been great in helping me keep tabs on this kind of stuff. It has you set a weight loss goal and uses that plus your age, height, and weight to determine how many calories to consume a day to achieve that goal. It also has a large database of foods and nutrition facts and such, and you just plug them in to determine what and how much you can eat daily.
I've consistently ran every other day for the past month. I started off at only a few miles each time, but I'm averaging around five miles every other day now, sometimes breaking six. I haven't had fast food in a month, and the last soda I drank was roughly three weeks ago, so I think that's had a huge impact on my progress.
Physically, the running has gotten easier, and I've gotten several remarks about my face looking thinner. I brought what I could of my old weight set from my mom's house to my house, just dumbbells. I haven't been lifting very much, but I have a quick ten minute routine I do with the dumbbells in the morning on most days; my arms and shoulders seem to be gaining some definition again.
Anyway, yesterday was my off day and I weighed in at 248. My overall goal is to at least get down to the 205-215 range, and at best break 200.
This has all been a big shock to me, but for more than the obvious reasons. Even back when I was in shape, it was never about losing weight or slimming down. I played college football, so the goal was always to bulk up. Since I was in the weight room three hours a day anyway, I could essentially eat what I wanted and not suffer any significant consequences.
Right now, I just want all my damn old jeans to fit.
I'm posting this here because Amanda seems a bit played out on my diet talk, and I feel a bit self conscious bringing it up to anyone else, especially if I fall off the horse and into my old eating habits. I saw Meech mention in another thread that he had lost ~70 pounds over a period of time, so I guess it kind of inspired me to share my current situation and goals.
Anyone here have any fitness-related stories they'd like to share?

How did it go? If you're still around. That's an incredible sorry. Congrats!

Just rediscovered this thread after someone revived it. I did end up breaking 200 pounds, weighing in at 197 on my wedding day a month ago. I've been slacking with my exercise and eating like shit since then, and I'm back up to 207, but it's still pretty good with all things considered.

Edited by Struvee: 10/12/2014 8:29:49 PMI bought a Kona Jake 2015 Cyclocross bike in August and I've lost about 20 pounds the last two months. Made some lifestyle changes too but mostly it's because I want to get faster on the bike. I'm 6'6" and went from 253lbs to 236lbs in early October and still dropping. I've gotten to where I can ride over 20 miles in one shot easily. I don't monitor my calories but I've cut waaaayyy back on fast food stuff. I eat a lot of lasagne, spaghettie, & Mexican type stuff. I also mix in grilled chicken and rice in between workouts on rest days. Hoping to get in the 220 range, maybe less I'll see how it goes but I feel much better.

Bravo! Primo, twenty pounds in 2 and half months is really, really, good. In fact, you might be losing too quickly, but that's another subject. For now, keep up the good work man, worry about the rest later. If I may, how tall are you?
-
Nice work Primo! Keep it up :) I've gone from 70 kg 1 year ago (a bit underweight) up to 85-90 kg now which I'm much happier with. Still trying to get some reps out on my bench for how much I weigh, but had to stop lifting a few weeks ago due to second degree burns to my arm :( I can't wait till I can exercise again.

That's awesome bro! Congrats! I'd like to do the same but lack motivation. I have asthma so it's hard for me to get started, and if I stop for one day I stop all together. I'm glad to see you're doing well though :) Any tips you can provide?

Today's weight: 229 This weekend has been pretty nice. Aside from my fiance and a few relatives, nobody had noticed my weight loss very much. This weekend, however, I got several comments (compliments?) from customers at work and several people I haven't seen since I started this whole thing. My old jeans fit again, my build could almost be described as "athletic" again, and my love handles are slowly but surely shrinking away. Feels good, man.
-
Congrats man, it's good to see you sticking to your routine! I actually started a new routine for myself as well. I've always been a twig, so I made it my resolution to gain good muscle definition. I've been hitting the gym consistently about 3-4 times a week, and it's really starting to show. My diet could use some work still though (Our campus food is unhealthy as shit).

I'm 5'10" and pushing close to 300. I've cut soda out of my diet, just been drinking pretty much water or juices. Just worked out a good route to take for running/walking. I can do 1.9 miles on a loop through my neighborhood, I figure if I do that 7 days a week, I'll start shedding some pounds soon.

Update: 2-2-13 I'm not sure what happened, but I've been weighing in under 240 consistently for a couple days now. I weighed in at 237 yesterday and 238 today. (I went out for a family member's birthday last night and ate a shit-ton of middle eastern food: worth it.) I changed my routine up a little this week; I ran every day rather than every other day this week, alternating between a 6-mile run and a 3-mile run. So yeah, thirty pounds gone, thirty-five to go.
-
Update: 1-30-13 Nearly twenty-five pounds down, and my old jeans from my pre-fat days nearly fit me properly. The running is getting much easier, and I've also added some light weight lifting into my daily routine. Almost half way to my goal.

Congrats, OP.

Firstly, well done OP. I lost 50 pounds in about 3 months, I downloaded an app on my phone called "My Fitness Pal" which allows you to input your heaight/age/weight etc and it will give you a calorie goal each day in order to lose weight. I stuck to that and it made me cut down what I was eating because I had the info there and realised where I was going wrong. Over time I naturally progressed to doing regular excercise and buying more healthy food because it made sense. I'm just here to say that you're on the right track, try to hit your calorie goal though rather than stay drastically under it, you'll be a lot happier and healthier that way and won't feel hungry all the time.

Edited by Dooodley: 1/23/2013 12:52:30 PMSomewhat health related, I'm trying to quit smoking. I don't smoke anymore but I choose to use the term "trying" anyway since I'd still love to have one from time to time. Here's what i don't get, tobacco companies are not allowed to have their own commercials on tele (over here, don't know about the rest of the world) but it's perfectly fine for all the quit-smoking companies to run their ads. It's freaking impossible to not think about smoking when every other commercial is about cigarette substitutes.

You are doing it wrong. You need around 2000 calories a day. If you take in that little you will gain it all back once you start eating normally. I ate 2000 - 2500 a day when I started working out, and went from 284 to 184 in 13 months. Im not gaining it back either, because I ate a good amount of food. Also dont worry about calories as much, focus on getting sugar and processed carbs down.

I got a bit of fat, I weight 225 pounds, but I have so much muscle that I could have abs if I lost 45 pounds and got down to 185. My friend weights 170 and still has a belly. Now that is called being skinny-fat.
-
Congrats! I've been through the same thing. Admittedly, I wasn't as heavy as you were when you started, but I've always been overweight and out of shape, hovering around 220. I'm a pretty tall guy at 6', so I've never looked large, but never in shape either. I've attempted work out routines at my college's gym, and it helps as I've always developed muscle quickly, but never formed it a habit or coupled it with a good diet. Now I think I've got the diet down, mostly. I'm drinking a lot more water which has helped me reduce my eating, and now I'm down to about one meal a day, with a small snack in the evening. I've actually seen an increase in my amount of energy, too. I really just need to cut out the occasional bar trips with my buddies. So difficult! :p

If I slapped your belly how long would the ripples go on for?

Edited by ecartman1214: 1/21/2013 4:25:56 AMI gained quite a bit of weight after departing the military. Being fit and in shape is an amazing feeling. That should be your motivation. I'm 6 Foot 2 inches (188 CM) and weigh 185-190 generally. I considered this my peak as any more weight loss would have only been possible with muscle loss. Anyways once you get to this stage just about anything becomes easy. You can walk around virtually all day and not get tired. Your immune system will stronger and you won't sick as often (if at all). Unfortunately that level of fitness comes with a price. You can't stop exercising and you need to keep your diet in check there is no freedom, either you eat what you want and be fat and lazy, or you diet and exercise and be fit. I chose option one and it really happens fast. I am also using that App to get back to where I was, it works great. Another thing I wanted to point out is avoid chemicals! That 0 calorie chemically enhanced sweetener is big friggin NO-GO! That stuff adds weight that is hard to burn off, and ironically should be just as limited in consumption as soda with real sugar. Avoiding fast food is an absolute must do. I personally recommend drinking V8. Its filling, gross, but most importantly full of vitamins your body needs. Avoid V8 fusion, tastes good, lots of sugar and therefore calories.

I'm sad that #PrimoBlog will probably be an actual thing, with how frequent Primo blogs.
