Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from outside of a police box, where I've been camping out for three days! It might just be a regular police box, but I've been sitting here watching it just in case it turns out to be a time machine!
But never mind that! After finishing up Sailor Moon, I was planning to watch Sailor Moon, I was planning on watching Sailor Moon Crystal, which I had, of course, purchased in advance! Only it turns out, 200 20 minutes episodes of Sailor Moon is kind of a lot, and I burnt myself out and didn't really want to watch Crystal, at least not right now...
So, anyway, having learned absolutely nothing, I decided to instead go and buy 160ish 40 minute episodes of Doctor Who!
I've seen one or two episodes before, but this is my first time sitting down and watching things chronologically. I haven't seen 96% of these episodes. As of right now, I just barely wrapped up the Eccleston stuff. "Rose" up through "The Parting of Ways".
The episodes I'd seen in the past are, to my knowledge, the ones that are generally regarded as some of the better ones, like, The Empty Child, and some of the Weeping Angel & Silence stuff. So, part of me was worried that the rest of the series just, like, might not be as good. Thankfully, I was happy to be proven wrong so far. I was a little iffy on the first episode, and a bit conflicted on the last episode, but I enjoyed every other episode in the season!
My favorite episode in this first season was probably The Unquiet Dead. While I know they weren't technically ghosts, I did like the spooky ghost vibe going on, and the psychic girl was really fun. Father's Day probably had my favorite character moment for the Doctor--the whole episode just kinda showed his whole vibe the best, I think. Doing everything he could to save everyone instead of taking the easy way out, and then sacrificing himself when everyone else was in danger. My favorite moment for Rose was right near the end, I believe in The Parting of Ways, when she's sitting at a restaurant with her mum and boyfriend, and gets super angry about having to sit there and do nothing while the Doctor is risking his life. It's a trope I've seen plenty of times before, but it felt a lot more... Personal this time then it often does. And I think the fact that Rose just stormed out before anyone said anything back might've been part of it.
I also really love it when a show throws you a bunch of seemingly disconnected episodes and then reveals a big needle running through them, which in this case came in the form of the whole Bad Wolf thing. It was doubly fun to realize it was staring me in the face the whole time, and I just never noticed. I dig it.
The actual ending is probably the part I was the most iffy on. The kiss scene felt a little weird to me--the kiss with Rose, that is, the kiss with Jack was fine--because I kinda saw Rose and the Doctor having more of a father/daughter kind of relationship rather than anything romantic. Then the actual reveal of what the Bad Wolf was felt sort of like a deus ex machina... Yet, also not? It had its proper foreshadowing, and all that, so I guess it works, but I don't know... Maybe it was less that it felt like a deus ex machina, and more a big jump in the power scaling. Just letting a character straight up rewrite time and all that.
And, the Doctor was telling us it was a bad thing, that that's not something you can just do, and while I agree, I don't think the show itself did a good job at showing us why, because it did kinda just get us the best case scenario? Earth was saved, and the Daleks were wiped out, and without the Bad Wolf, that simply wasn't an option.
Like, the show posed the question "are you a coward or a killer", and the rest of the episodes in the season were showing a more nuanced take to this question. Showing his enemies mercy actually backfired a lot, but there were also plenty of times where it actually did get us the best ending... But then at the climax, it feels like the question is just sidestepped altogether.
Still, great season overall, I enjoyed it, and I'm excited to keep watching!
Speaking of, you may be curious, how much of Doctor Who am I watching? I picked up Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, and Copaldi. iTunes had them all on sale for really good deals, but unfortunately, that's where it stopped. The iTunes listings beyond that point are both more expensive, and also inconsistent... They legit just keep appearing and disappearing on the marketplace. But that's fine, this will take me forever as is. If I'm not burnt out on the show by the end of all this, I can figure out the rest then.
Tl;dr? Here's my point!
I'm watching Doctor Who for the first time. Good fun.
But that's all for now, folks! Jambuhbye!

6 RepliesNice! There's definitely great episodes forrl each Doctor. 10th was my favorite but I found things to enjoy for each even if I started having less fun overall as time went on. I hope you enjoy each iteration!
