What made the game fun?

Someone asked me what was fun before edge of fate and the portal. To me a person with multiple accounts and over 10k hours there was a lot that was fun. It is different for everyone but for me it was the ability to log on and go anywhere and do anything and get viable rewards. I work a stressful job and when i come home I want to relax and enjoy playing destiny not grinding and small amount of content that is always harder no mater how strong I get. Stuff i have to -blam!- multiple negative modifiers and deal with timers on everything and focusing on getting a good enough score to get good loot. I had fun playing gambit and multiple different pvp modes like mayhem. Playing seasonal content with new story gear and weapons was fun even if it wasn't always the best stuff it was new nd fresh and by the time it got boring it was time for the next season. Sometimes you just want to get on and run some strikes with random guardians without worrying if the modifiers are going to be tortured much to finish because it's ultimate difficulty and punishment is the new end game. Lots of stuff was fun back then because we weren't forced into this little box of punishment they call the portal, where instead of playing hown i really want to play and feel like a god killer im suppose to be im playing pick your punishment, im waiting for pinhead to pop in at any min like im in a hell raiser movie. Don't get me wrong the portal could be okay if we dont have to always run at a negative and always run negative modifiers with timers for everything.

  • Yeah I agree with you, it used to be fun, being able to play virtually anything you wanted and end up with some decent rewards or working towards decent rewards, this current system is beyond ridiculous, after a hour of the same repetitive, bullet sponge, negative modifier, guff you just want to turn it off and play something that’s actually fun

  • The last few months of the final shape with the ability to actually do dungeons by myself for the first time since destiny1; strongholds for the first couple months of edge of fate… and believe it or not a little bit of the grind on edge of fate… some of the items are OK some are not…

  • I loved doing GM's until this season, I really dislike the Ultimate BS they made. Most GM's were fine and some were though but a few hard ones made it feel special. Now it's just harder but not more fun. Fun should always be a top priority. Hopefully Bungie will finally listen before this season ends and go back to when it used to be fun.

    • Brother, this is so on point for my experience with the game. My GM would make sure we got Conqueror done and we’re always looking forward to Battlegrounds rotating in to provide new GM experiences. We’d goof off in gambit or dares when there was good loot to chase. Always played the crap out of dungeons. We used to raid but too many clan guys dipped before we could run Salvation’s Edge. Seasonal stuff was good/great most of the time and provided interesting weapons or artifact perks to make the game feel fresh. Portal is just small soulless number grind.

        complete freedom to play with whatever builds and loadouts that made you happiest and most comfortable frequent big dopamine hits from both loot and the power fantasy of getting stronger and destroying everything faster and faster the new systems basically strip away dopamine from almost everything, you feel weaker as you level up and get better gear, and you have virtually no freedom to use anything but current season directed gear otherwise your loot will suck and have even less dopamine - got some favorite gear and weapons? Bungie doesn't care at all. They don't seem to care about you whatsoever unless you're a lifer grinding t5. They apparently assume you were gonna quit anyways so who cares. they treat the playerbase like a bunch of mindless drones to be run through their rat maze that was changed to 40x longer and just crumbs until the very end if you ever make it there never seen such a drastic systems change so successful at chasing away the vast majority of the playerbase

        • Q: What made it fun? A: D1Y1 and beyond - right up until the Sunset debacle… TLDR: Space Magic Here’s why… Prior to the weekly reset, we’d head for the Gorgons cave, and loot that chest. Invariably, other buddies from around the world would join, and we’d rotate in-and-out switching to different characters, to maximise the looting. Reset would happen…then we’d go and do the NFall strike to get our blue flambé hairdo - a buff, then we’d go Raid until we were done. But, we were never actually done, because someone’s buddy or a recent new Friend would need some help to get something done - so we’d go do it. After, those with any energy left might head to the Crucible…or go to sleep!😴 Trials events: for pure grins and giggles, 3x of us would get together to try our luck and see how far we could get; if we survived to win games 3 and 5 - we’d get some armour or a weapon…and that was a yahoo! moment. Going flawless (7 Ws) was unlikely ever to happen…not for want of trying, more because we were PvE bunnies not PvP bunnies…and these bunnies played to win. We played for fun! I was into hunting down collectibles; I got the ToM…and, as a bubble Titan, I was very much in demand to help beat Oryx. And that was the most satisfying fun for me! I was a PvP grinder…with a tortoise approach as suited my play style. I was not a hare in PvP or PvE. I did accumulate most of the ‘must have’ guns and stuff…with help from my (then) young Ninja…😁 I even managed to get Thorn…just before they nerfed it. And that’s how we did it back then…week in and week out…right up until the Sunset debacle…and that’s when the space magic vibe evaporated…along with pages of one’s Friends List…and shortly thereafter, I bounced, too…over to WF (MR24 😎 iykyk) That said, it wasn’t all rose-tinted reflections…there were plenty of issues in game…BHQ were having regular internal dramas - power games between creatives and suits; there were a growing number of issues with veracity, eg, play the way you want to…see that mountain over there…etc. Bugs / P2P issues / Contacting Destiny Servers - what servers?…a growing sense of unease began to creep in about these new people in charge at BHQ…The Scarab Lord and his minions…One of the main architects behind the Sunset debacle… And here we are…back to the present! And just look at the state of the game…🧐 Sony / BHQ - lurk behind a wall of silence… cue <crickets> SMH 🙄 That is all. Just my 2d worth. YMMV Ease Springs! 🫤

            • The story missions mainly, but not so much these last years of stories. I like the actual gunplay - running and shooting. As the OP, I have a job wih a lot of stress and some overtime, so I liked Destiny at the time where you could just sit down and quickly jump into action, get some rewards and feel a climb in power. I even at a point played some PVP for the loot, even if I'm mainly a PVE player as I don't have so much time to play. Now I haven't played Destiny for a long time, guess it's well over a month if not two. I don't like to feel like I'm will be punished (setting negative modifiers). I don't like all the tedious puzzles that have been implemented in order just to take time and I never liked all the platforming. I certainly hate timers. I played through EoF story missions and the single activity that came after the last story mission, that was that.

            • It started to go downhill when they addressed ‘power creep’. I wasn’t a good player but took part in all activities including raids. What allowed me to get involved was that I ground out my level to be much higher than my better team mates and thus was able to hold my own. Now I’d just be a skid mark on the bottom of a team, so I just do everything else but raid.

              The power fantasy. Bungie has slowly destroyed that and left something unenjoyable in its place. They’ve had a history of people becoming influential who either didn’t understand this or didn’t respect it….and tried to remake the game into what they wanted it to be rather than what players wanted. …and yes the lack of freedom in terms of how we want to play the game is part of it too.
