The bananas aren't worth the climb, the carrots aren't worth the treadmill. The loot this season just hasn't excited me that much; the armor sets look kind of mid, the weapons aren't that impressive, and the fact that a lot of their benefits is tied to +10% bonuses (compared to better perks) leads me to believe the gear will be even less impressive once that bonus goes away.
I wonder how much of player attrition is just that the effort to get this gear isn't worth it to many people; that's how it feels to me, anyway. Do I really want to grind for another two dozen hours to get a Tier 5 weapon - when I'm not really that interested in the weapon in the first place? When next season or next year that weapon will lose its luster along with its +10% damage bump?
We're being asked to sweat more than ever to get the top lower-case-t tier weapons in the game, we're being asked to sweat more than ever to get to level cap, when we power up we're asked to sweat even more for the same gear we've already got but with a few enhanced perks or a few more stat points. For me, at least, the rewards aren't worth the effort we're being asked to put in.
Renegades either needs to turn down the sweat level, or dramatically increase the quality of loot, and I'm not just talking about tiers here, I'm talking about the inherent quality, the coolness, the funness, of the loot. The basic bread and butter perks need to be more exciting, the armor sets need to look cool, the rewards need to be rewarding enough to justify a hundred hours of sweat, and right now they don't.
Rewards matter in a looter shooter. The improvement to enhanced perks goes a long way, but it's still not enough to make me excited about a weapon I've already looted and dismantled twenty times. Getting filler weapons and filler armor doesn't feel rewarding, and most of the loot we get is filler. If Tier 4 and 5 loot is the goal, that means three fifths of the loot pool is filler and placeholder, something to hold us over until we get the Tier 4 and Tier 5 loot. Low Tier gear feels like getting calorie free carrots.
I'm not playing right now because it doesn't feel like it's worth it. We're being asked to sweat more than ever, but the gear hasn't risen to the level of the effort; the benefits of leveling up don't feel worthwhile compared to the costs of leveling up.
If I'm going to be asked to sweat then I want rewards that are commensurate with that sweat, and sadly for Bungie, "sweaty" is a sliding scale. One player's sweat is another player's breeze. Pushing all players into the same Master and Grandmaster level content isn't going to work for all of us, that's where the carrots come in, but the carrots aren't that great, either.
Renegades needs to either have less sweat, or better rewards, or both, before I come back to the game.
