Bungie, you have forgotten the idea behind why people play games

I have played D2 since it's inception. (Not a console player, so that's why I didn't play D1). I played the game a lot. I have over 9000 hours invested in the game. I started playing it because it was FUN, and it was ENJOYABLE. Yes, it was challenging and frustrating at times, but the core aspects of the game were that it was FUN and ENJOYABLE. That is no longer the case. You never ever mention those words in the TWAB (TWID, X, whatever). You have, sadly gone to the complete opposite extreme. You have made it punishing, a grind, and unenjoyable. I get it that there needs to be challenges and there needs to be a path to earning levels, but we should be excited about playing the game and earning rewards. That's so far from what exists right now, it can't have been by accident. Think about it. Right now, to go from 300-400 (I presume that 400-500 is exactly the same) it is beyond painful There are 8 items that each need to be leveled up. Basically, at 1 level per run, that's 800 (EIGHT HUNDRED) runs to increase ONE character from 300 to 400 or 400-500. Even if you were to say "oh no, we give you 2 levels", that's still 400 runs, and that's assuming that you get a different l item each run, which, NEVER happens, so you are probably up to like 1000 (ONE THOUSAND) runs to make the 100 level increase. How in the world do any of the Bungie Devs, Management, or Community Devs think that normal people a) enjoy that, or b) have time to make the increase? Hint:, they don't, and that's a good reason they are stopping playing. And even then, the "money" cost of unstable cores is beyond ridiculous. I would love to have multiple classes to play with (Prismatic, Solar, Arc, etc, ), but I literally can't afford the cost. And once you get that 100 levels, the chances of getting the armor, or weapon you want is vanishingly small, and probably takes several more HUNDREDS, if not THOUSANDs of runs to try and get something you want, especially because you killed crafting. This is the first time since d2 started, that I don 't even have one of my 3 characters anywhere near max power. It's literally impossible for a normal person to accomplish. I would love to get my other two characters leveled up and try new things, but even thought I just turned 70 and retired, I don't have the time or the energy to subject myself to the torture and time you decided was no big deal. You have stacked the deck against your players. I used to think EA was the most anti-player company out there, but your actions have put them to shame. I am not angry about bugs, or things that don't work right when launched, because that's normal, but you are, for some reason, known only to you, making the game incredibly unpleasant to play. IT"S A CHORE, it is NOT FUN, it is NOT REWARDING, it is NOT ENJOYABLE. It used to be, and I mourn this loss of vision and commitment to players and having them enjoy the game and have fun. @dmg_04 gets beat up a lot, and I hate that, but TBH, he's trying to defend the undefendable. Half the people I used to play with have quit because of the fact that it's NOT FUN or ENJOYABLE. I used to play every day, but I can't force myself many days. "Oh Boy, I get to run 10-15 mind numbing Calderas to maybe add 1 or 2 levels in a day:. Do you guys play the game any more? It used to be clear that you did because you understood the concept of making it fun and enjoyable and achievable, while still being challenging. I really love D2 and want to keep playing, but you are getting close to driving me out as well. There's just no fun, enjoyment, or sense of being able to achieve meaningful in any reasonable time. Even now, I think the game is salvageable and certainly worth saving. The story this season was one of the best ever. But if you can't make it fun and enjoyable and not such a painful and punishing grind, it's going to die. I read the TWID, and in many ways you are still just putting lipstick on the painful pig grind. As you get higher in level, you are reducing the rewards and making the required time investment even more punishing. You have 4 bad things that you MUST fix. 1. Stop requiring hundreds of runs to level up 2. Stop making it ridiculously hard to level up items (Unstable core economy is like Russian Rubles. Completely unrealistic 3. Make it easier to actually get the rolls and the items players want. (Saying we can focus things is complete lie. I rarely, very rarely, get armor with the stat bases that I want. And exotic engrams NEVER have them 4. Stop making it "just a chance" to get to get high tier gear when a player manages to make high level. Why do you insist on punishing success? I had 40 clears before I got navigator, and well over 2 for the sundered doctrine exotic. Why? if you hit 10 or 15, it should be automatic, and tier 5 gear (engrams), should be at least 50 50, not 1% increasing ever run I would love to play this game for the rest of my life, but unless you remember that the game is supposed to be fun, enjoyable and rewarding, that's not going to happen. it will die long before I do. You can fix it, but the question is, do you really want to, or are you just done with it as well as the players? Jim Gerretson

I agree with your sentiments and disappointment in the current state of D2 and Bungie in particular. However I also agree with rat below, not his snarky attitude you understand, but his statement that Bungie don’t care. They don’t. The problem is that they forgot that we need to care about the game so they can have jobs and prosper. More and more people don’t care about this game and Bungie. Less than 19,000 peak players on steam. Less than 325,000 unique log ins today from Charlemagne. The game is starting to tank. And that is a good thing. It’ll either get Bungie to pull their fingers out of their collective asses, Sony to take over and /or the game to be put on maintenance and the only thing they update is Everworse and the four seasonal events. Or more likely just Everworse. And I’m apathetic to all of it. Just like Bungie I don’t care anymore about their game, except to mock them and the glazers on here for their abject stupidity. “Working as intended”.

OP - Jim: a good and heartfelt post on the current state of the game. 👍 You are not alone in your expressed frustrations, nor of the possibly forlorn hope that Sony / BHQ will turn things around, with a major course correction…before the inevitable happens… IMHO: the current / new leadership inherited a ‘poisoned chalice’…courtesy of all those C-Suite rats that have since deserted this sinking ship. Also, I do not include Joe B with the rats mentioned above. 👈 It’s been one wrong move after another since D1Y1…and the first major floundering was the Sunset debacle 1.0…for that’s when the D1 ‘fun’ vibe evaporated - almost overnight, and just worsened as time went by. Reasonable Guardians understand the potential for Destiny to fulfill its untapped potential…but, it seems, BHQ mismanagement team & those Devs responsible had other plans…ones that were fuelled by greed and avarice, and driven by HUBRIS writ large. And, here we are today: teetering on the brink of absolute failure. 🤡🤑🤥🤑🤡 Sony paid billions of $ for a toxic 🍋 - however did they not see the writing on the wall?!? 🤔 Whatever happens next, I’m prepared…to stay the course and/or move on, accordingly. ITMT: I was not chasing anything - except higher tier favourite toys, nor any LL numbers…by simply playing the game and the events, especially crucible of late, I just hit 450. Early in the climb, I ditched using my normal vanilla gear and fully embraced the new toys - which are pretty good, and gear…stuck with my T…stopped infusing stuff and just swapped it out for a better LL piece. As I climbed the LL *ladder, at around 300-350 I stopped doing portaloo missions and just concentrated on Events and Crucible… Also, another key decision I made was to play portaloo stuff on my TechSec gear + Givers B, which was/is a blast. I burned virtually everything else armour wise, except to collect the Trials / IB sets for my T / W / H. I also burned a lot of stuff in my vault…even though I didn’t really want to. That needed to happen but it wasn’t fun. Now, at 450 - I farmed the loot cave for a bit but soon tired of tier 5 toy drops at 200 only. Puzzled, I did spend a fortune to infuse Givers B / Sublimation / Last Thursday - then, I took them for a spin in Control - both modes, depending upon which one paid the most loot! I was very pleasantly surprised when every game dropped tier 5 toys and gear at either 440* min. or 450+ which happened the most. And this is where this old tortoise is at…now bringing my W and H up to speed, in Crucible only, and wallowing in a flood of tier 5 loot. Not sure if any of the a/m helps…it’s just my tale of my climb up the mountain… Murphy, my ghost, loved the tale! 👻 That is all. Play Fair! Play Nice! Don’t Quit / Cheat. 👈 Ease Springs! 🖖 *autobot errors corrected ✅

      • Couldn’t agree more. I’m trying. I really am. But I log on and can’t find the motivation to do anything! Where’s the fun? What happened to “play how you want?” What happened to this game’s soul!? Who TF asked for a mindless power grind!? Literally NOBODY!!!

        • I really agree with your post and I’ve read it all it’s really sad how this game is dying very BADLY half of the player base like 50% have already left,Bungie Being silent on all of the issues even on the cis region issue and the one main thing you have forgotten to mention Tyson green and Justin Truman being silent no twitter comment from the CEO at all It’s time for Sony to step right now.

It's possible to save the game but they don't care, Marathon should of been released a few days ago but was delayed. If bungie want players to buy Marathon, they need to fix d2 now, and make it enjoyable, otherwise Marathon will be a total flop, who's going to buy it, when players know how bungie treats it's players, i won't play it if it was free, i bet cosmetics will be their way of making money, and the pvp side will be broken.

        • Bad luck protection for those who haven't earned the exotic against those who have would help with that. And I agree with the rest. But still I agree with what else has been said: Bungie doesn't care. Some who work there do but not the overall company that puts out the TWID, IMO.

        • I'll always remember the staffer in the vidoc saying how she wanted the GM Liminality to make players cry or some such comment about the difficulty. I remember thinking 'this ain't Dark Souls' I guess she didn't realise what would come next 🤔

          • lol, the latest TWID is just more tweaks, and the fact they’ve needed this many only proves how out of touch Bungie really is. They have no real sense of what players actually enjoy or what kind of grind we’re willing to put up with. They keep doubling and tripling down on a system built around meaningless light levels, arbitrary gear tiers, and forcing everyone into activities most people would rather avoid. Like an activity? Bungie makes sure you don’t by piling on tedious negative modifiers until the fun is gone. Like the power fantasy of leveling up? It doesn’t matter anymore, because almost every activity is locked behind steep negative deltas that punish you out of the gate. Like getting a final set of gear? The carrot is set at tier 5, but the path there demands an obscene amount of hours slogging through punishing modifiers and huge power deltas. Like the idea of finishing your grind and just enjoying your gear for a while? Bungie erases that as well with six-month resets that wipe your light level and invalidate the currencies that matter. Like fair PvP? That’s gone too, since gear tiers now guarantee a permanent advantage for some players, destroying any sense of an even playing field. At this point, Bungie has already systematically dismantled the core of the game in order to chase metrics. It almost feels like their plan was to make the experience as miserable as possible, then dial it back slightly after the backlash. But there’s no way they expected engagement numbers to collapse as hard as they just did, hitting record-level drop offs.

          • You are definitely not alone. I played past cpl days after I took a break and went on vacation during the ash and iron update. Come back and feels like nothing changed. I beat my head against the wall for 2 days for what 10 light points if that. They have forgotten how to make it enjoyable, now its a mess! I used to love d2. With bf6 coming and borderlands 4 not sure i will be back

              • I’m glad a new Borderlands game came out, It’s going to satisfy my looter shooter fix without fomo. I honestly hope it brings Bungie to the brink so they fix their game and their company. Not holding out though.

                • Why in the world would you run 10 - 15 Calderas in a day? How could you think that could be fun? Your leveling experience has been different from mine. Running with my friends a couple of days ago I was getting multiple drops at +2 or +3 from activities. I also get multiple levels on the weekly rewards from the Portal and the gear from Zavala. Plus any event rewards. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the grind is fine. I'm saying your numbers are wonky. I think 800 runs is an exaggeration. I think 1000 is ridiculous. There are more ways than ever to get the category of gear you need. There are a lot more levels to grind but each level is easier. When it comes to having fun - what's in a number anyway? More than 9k hours? That's a lot. About 70.1k hours have passed since D2 was released on pc. For the last 8 years you've spent about 12.5 percent of your time playing Destiny. I'd give you a more accurate number but your linked account shows about 7.5k hours. You must have had multiple accounts. Still, that's a huge amount of your time. About 3 hours a day for the last 8 years! Any chance you might be dealing with a little case of burnout? I only have 5k in D2 and 1500 in D1. Nowadays I run for 2 or 3 hours 2 or 3 times a week. I still have fun. I still love the game. You're 70 years old. You know how life works by now. Take responsibility for your own gaming experience. Do what's fun and ignore the rest. You've played so much and done so much in this game - way past what most players accomplish - that you know how to have fun. You obviously love the game. Clearly it's had tremendous value in your life. Don't let Bungie define your relationship with it. Kill things - don't die. Prosper.

                    • I don't understand how anyone can still play this game yet support a developer who is still constantly making mistakes after mistakes after mistakes. Do you honestly have nothing better to do than throw money at a company that treats you like dirt! Can you not see that? Call me a fool for writing something within this forum after all these months, but prove me wrong for questioning because I'm completely baffled and lost for words.
