There's a countdown period in between rounds. You'll carry the spark at 5 and than at 10 you fight the boss.
It couldn't hurt for them to add a number to the screen when you pull out your ghost. Visual indicators are always nice but we get two clear indicators from those portals.
The game let's you know when extinguish is active. Wave 31 I think.
