As for shotguns precision and aggressives (+the exotics) deal a massive amount of damage but are basically useless in anything above hero content as the damage doesn't make up for the point blank range even in Dungeons and raids they struggle. Aside from precisions which are currently being used in dps builds for having high range and damage.
