Me too, same exact problem. Tried all the methods and two different phone numbers on different networks, +44 country code.
Why is this system so broken? Seems utterly ridiculous to have so much content SMS-gated and a verification method that is so unreliable.

You are absolutely right most content is locked and thats why i’ve been trying for two weeks straight every single day with 0 luck. Whats worse is that this game has no support to fix it or help you add your number.
