Who would have thought by not pre order a product you don’t know much about can force a company to make some improvements?

They were probably going to roll out another expansion that doesn’t expand the core playlists again. 100 bucks with one new strike, one PvP map and nothing for gambit is not an expansion. Sad news yes, but by not whaling some changes are happening good or bad. 🤔

This argument doesn’t go far enough. It fails to include how Lightfall was the biggest launch in the history of the franchise. The contradiction about sales with the failure this argument points to should be taken seriously to better understand what happened. They didn’t take a loss because people didn’t buy the game. They took a loss because people retired it super early. That might not matter so much for a game like AC Valhalla…. But for a GAAS title like Destiny that’s really really bad. To paraphrase the old Soviet style joke— in GAAS, Destiny is not the product being sold, YOU are. Now— what that means for Final Shape? Different conversation. I’m going to see it through to the end of this saga, personally.

    • This is the first new expansion since the begging I have NOT pre-ordered when it first became avaialble because why would I? Same thing over and over and actually worse every season as we just keep getting the same thing rebranded over and over. Same activities just different enemies in different locals. Same NF's and Stirkes became corrupt by battlegrounds, activites sunset, feastivals crappy, we listen and then give you something limited, random drop weighting forcing you to play hundreds of times to get something that sounds fun but then by the time you get it its nerfed. Nerf, nerf, nerf, never fix things that cause issues for players but if it benefits them then remove/fix it within just a couple of days. Game play requiring toxic outside resources to access when if we are to run as teams then provide us the means IN GAME to do so. Story telling that requires players to provide it to us (THANKS BYF! The one streamer we actually need and love!) I could go on for a very long time but we all have for years so whats the point anymore. Good news - till I see a reason to care - why should I???

      • It is not just the pre orders. A lot of the game changes over the last 2 years have driven players away from the game. If not completely away then away enough they are not purchasing and spending silver. The game has become less accessible in many ways. It is too gear dependent, the "Challenge" increase, the content vault, Bungie's woke agenda, sun setting ... Enough average run of the mill players have stopped spending and that hit Bungie's wallet very hard. This is what it looks like when you anger enough players with unpopular changes, we just stop feeding our hard earned dollars to gaming companies. Sorry for the layoffs, but they should have listened a lot sooner then now, and they probably are still not listening.

        • Bungie has been half-assing for a number of years now, but the core activities were still good and added enough depth to keep people playing anyway. The last two years they've systematically decimated those core activities. Pvp has been made unplayable for a large number of players because of the poor implementation of cross play (which just doesn't seem to work with D2's pvp infrastructure) and the removal of solo que playlists, Strikes have been downgraded by removing good strikes, adding new drawn out mechanics to old strikes, and putting in Battlegrounds that are just basically runs through old patrol areas that culminate into a boss fight with three bosses in the same room, and Gambit has been left to die with no new loot and three maps(?) and too many irritating invasions that break the flow. Then they slowly made seasonal "content" less and less. This season (while the spire activity is great) had several weeks where we just listened to a new audio track and nothing else. And now they act surprised that people aren't playing. Also, just look at FotL. Nothing new or engaging. A super long empty lore grind for a story that's about as deep as a later Xanth novel. Then the last page of the lore book costs nine pages per lore entry, adding up to about 40 core activities to just complete that page of the book. It's no wonder the playerbase just said "no thanks".

Funny how they mentioned trust...."first you get players trust, then increase that players retention, then you get the revenues". They are LITERALLY doing the same song and dance lol. no pre order from me this time. Definitely no deluxe edition

        • They aren’t going to make the game better. The higher executives are trying to salvage a bit of a profit. Their new project is Marathon and it is delayed due to a very poor reception at a gameplay testing. The higher up executives had a “let them eat cake” attitude. Unsure if any of the laid off employees even had an effect on the gameplay and story itself, but I have no doubt another round will come later.

          • You can thank me for the changes because I barely play anymore. I used to love this game but they're pushing me further and further away. Most of you talk trash, make purchases in the eververse (with real money not bright dust), chase guns that are trash or nerfed shortly thereafter, and then login daily. Then to top it all off you buy something sight unseen six months in advance. Oops, six months plus the delay. You're paying for a years content 18 months before the end date. A lot can happen in that time as we see. How could you argue when you're locked in until 2025? Guess who can? This guy because I matter. I make up the loss and sheep make up the profit for this crappie game and the future. Only when they make the necessary changes that deserve my money will I contribute. As we see my money is what matters. My money is what they care about. Your money has been seized and no longer of value to them. That's the greed you speak of but is empowered by you. I hope this makes you think.

Dude I didn’t think it was so mass scale, I’m used to people just pre ordering without thinking. I guess I wasn’t the only one who just thought lightfall was pure disrespect

                • People pre-order for the exclusive incentives, that's why the shift away from physical software took away FOMO , so to keep the free money rolling in, devs had to add in-game incentives Just like people pre-ordered light fault when they saw that beautiful auto rifle that shot mini-rockets and grenades, they couldn't get there card out fast enough But nobody's breaking the bank for a fusion

I like to believe that my not having given bungie a single cent since witch queen might have played a very very small part in bringing about change. Feels bad that people lost their jobs though. More bad decisions from bungo management and even more reason not to give them money.

                        • Either way, It's always sad for people to lose their jobs. Especially talented worker bees trying to make the best possible products, but corp suits prevent it. But to pretend Bungie is the first corp to do this or even the first gaming corp to do this is laughable. People still buy from Blizzard, Activision. EA, Ubisoft, Walmart, etc. But to the point - I foresee this bring the franchise back, akin to Vanilla D2 & Forsaken, or The franchise failing and fully going under. I don't see much middle ground. IMO: Justice/karma would truly be served if Marathon & TFS failed and Bungie's management & suits found themselves in the unemployment line.

                        • Bungie was relying hard on preorders for final shape but for once a lot of people did not get baited ! Looking pretty bleak now for destiny ….my expectations have lowered every season and now just not expecting much with all the people been shafted from the team .

                        • I’d go a bit beyond that. Consistent players not paying for things in eververse or seasonal events as much. Casual players (like a lot of my irl friends) aren’t buying dungeon keys or even while seasons. Lightfall and a few of the bigger changes that went with it drove most I know away. Difficulty changes and content fatigue being the most cited ones…

                          • Indeed. The leftover Lightfall (even going on sale once) and Final Shape collector’s editions speak volumes. I’d also agree with the “challenge back to Destiny” changes. A matter of choosing how many dedicated at the cost of more casual

                          • Preordering wouldn't be THAT bad of a thing if the video game industry hadn't moved to a "release a steaming pile of -blam!- on day 1, slowly fix it (maybe, looking at you Anthem...), and calling it "live service."" It's up to game devs and publishers to fund their own projects. Either by shelling out cash on hand, borrowing from investors, etc. Expecting me to *over pay for a product you've already told me wouldn't "overdeliver", and then nickel and diming me to death to get the rest of the experience aint it. And that's all before I can even boot the game to see how it plays. Hell, these days it's so bad, Bungie needs to allow full access to the entire expansion for 24 hours before expecting people to pay. They'd either do better or go bankrupt.
