During the city age, the speaker was more about political power than anything else which is why he stopped speaking the final truth (I believe there was 4 or 5 truths all speakers preached) which was the traveler would leave us.

To be fair he was also attempting to hold a City together after they had managed to come together in a Dark Age. As much as the Speaker looked down on those who questioned the Traveler and it’s intent, or those who decided to study our enemies, it’s understandable when taken as a man of his time. Without the Speaker, it’s likely the City would never have become a reality.

It came from season of the dawn, I forget the lore book name, but it was the lore book which dove into the speakers past
