I say “I’m gonna ___” because I’m the one controlling the character’s movements. I guess it’s a bit more personal when I play say, Destiny, and I designed my own character. But even then I rarely design a character to be like myself, often making a different gendered character, or different race of character, and then creating a little background story for them in my head… I digress… Destiny is different than playing Horizon: Zero Dawn in that respect. so I guess I would say “I’m gonna___” with whichever character I’m actively controlling, my best example being the Final Fantasy VII Remake, where you’re often controlling 2 or 3 characters. The main character in that game is Cloud, but if I was playing as Tifa, or Aerith, or Baret, I would still think to myself “I’m gonna attack that robot” regardless of which character I’m actively controlling. I view myself as an entirely different entity than the characters I control, I’m essentially controlling the actions and movements of the characters, but I am not the characters, and my view of a game’s story is largely similar to my view of movies. I remember being surprised how many people don’t personify as the character they’re playing as. I always do, even if that character is nothing like me. I am just as much Lily as I am Crisbell, as I am my Inkling, as I am Mario. I very much put myself in the shoes of whoever I’m playing, and I find it weird other folk don’t. How do you even play games? :p

I get attached to video game characters the same way I get attached to book characters. I’ll put myself in their shoes to try to understand their emotions, why they’re doing what they’re doing, but I’m not them. The same way I’m not Katniss Everdeen, or Harry Potter, or Thomas from the Maze Runner, etc. again, it’s different if I’m the one creating the characters, like Destiny 2 and Skyrim or my tabletop dungeon crawler character, I personify with those characters greatly. But Aloy, Nathan Drake, Cal Kestis… these are characters I’m attached to, and I want their stories to end well, but they’re not my story

A lot of folk who didn’t like Destiny still hung around for the community. When Bungie changed it so you had to make progress through the game the population dropped severely—especially in Gaming & Offtopic, where most of the non-Destiny players were. The thread Iinked was my final post in Gaming, where it was much, [i]much[/i] slower than it used to be, after the two Purges chased everyone away. Once upon a time [url=https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/220798014/0/0]there were even more than that[/url]. I miss Rhynerd.
