Hunters are meant to always be alone. Their class identinty is clear
Also tether = utility
You say trapper, but any of the actual traplike abilities are blatantly obvious by giving out their position to enemy players. Tripmines and tripknives for one, with their red flash and warning beep. The Black Hole Tether with a purple-tinged sphere, which btw still only half-activates when ran into even when a person is mid super like a hammer throwing Titan because of the delay in its suppression. It would be far more accurate to say that Hunters are more of a Runner or speed type, with Titans as tanks and Warlocks as Healer/Debuffer, and even then there are exotics and mods to build into that can allow a person to spec into a style that contradicts that. Case in point, Solar has a radiant dodge for allies and smoke bomb invis+Resistance with Omnioculus for Void.

Good analysis, I agree

I think the real issue, one that we all can agree upon, is that there isn’t a definite line drawn like typical class/role separation you would see in a standard rpg or the like; Bungie doesn’t know what they want and made up the build system with the 3.0’s in order to blur that line of class separation. On paper, I imagine their thought process was that it would help the differing classes to cover all grounds if you were playing in a fireteam, but in practice I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t think it was the PvPers who would find whatever means to complain about the changes just in order to get a leg up over the others.

True, I also made a post in how the 3.0 system makes class identity even less defined. Tbh I think D2 main focus should be PvE, to go all out on the power fantasy and have crucible as a side, for fun thing to increase the replayability/content and provide a different take on the PvE side. Sadly there are way too many people who like to consider themselves uberskilldPvPGods in a game where 90% of the stuff literally one shots you and the only skill gap is turning while sliding corners (and let’s not talk how exotics should not exist or be banned in a balanced and competitive environment).

Ignoring my clearly ironic post, hunters as a class are meant to be the rogue/trapper archetype. Their utility reflects this. Solar is their go to dps option while Void class has utility in the form of smoke/invis and weaken. It is different from other classes utility, but still utility it is.
