Looking back on this it is pretty contradictory for the first half. Like most people on this forum, I didn't really think of what I was saying till I said it.
Bungie needs to stop giving the guys doin death threats attention and just permanently band them.
1. Many if not most of these threats are likely being conveyed through social media on platforms Bungie does not control meaning they have no power to simply ban the offenders from using said platforms. 2. It is likely that a sizable percentage of those issuing threats to Bungie employees are doing so because they have already been banned from playing Destiny, in some cases perhaps multiple times. 3. Many of those who engage in harassment (including death threats and doxxing) attempt to do so anonymously, using social media accounts that cannot be easily linked to them. In order for Bungie to have a court issue an enforceable subpoena to discover the identities of said harassers, they must state that their intent is to pursue legal/civil remedies that a) have merit, and b) can only be pursued through the issuance of said subpoena. The information regarding these court actions is publicly available due to the fact that they are largely pursued within jurisdictions within the United States or other countries that have open records laws involving the judicial system. Any court reporter that sees a multi-billion-dollar company filing for a subpoena is going to report on it, so Bungie couldn’t keep these suits under wraps even if they wanted to (which they don’t). 4. Bungie wants these lawsuits to get as much media attention as possible. The more that the general public sees that courts are willing to grant subpoenas to strip away anonymity from those who engage in sending death threats, and that Bungie’s legal team will pursue civil actions possibly resulting in hefty monetary penalties, the more likely that those who are considering engaging in harassment will decide to stick to whiny ad hominem attacks rather than sending death threats or doxxing.
