There are no genders now, only masculine and feminine as to not cause offence.

Gee, I wonder what masculine and feminine means 🤔

They mean traits. Women can have masculine traits like a deep voice, being tall and muscular and men can have feminine traits, which is why Bungie changed it to them. Its supposed to be better than picking a specific gender (male/female) for your guardian.
