Considering returning to Destiny after 5-ish years…

I remember playing the destiny beta nonstop when it first released in the summer. The following fall I was in 8th grade. Every day I carried around a Destiny magazine with concept art and articles about the upcoming video game (eventually it started falling apart). My best friend and I would marvel at the same images every day. When the game finally dropped, I mained a Hunter, with my best friend a Titan. Together we played destiny until the Taken King, with our streak ending when I became an upperclassman in highschool, right before rise of iron dropped. I remember my first VoG run, cheesing the Crota raid, getting my highest kill streak ever on the old moon map in crucible using preadyth’s revenge and going mad trying to collect all of the house of wolves exotics. I also remember running weekly raids and crucible with my old clan. Young and old and from super different backgrounds we had the best conversations. I opened this app on a whim for the first time in years and found myself wondering if it would be possible to recapture the experience I’ve had before with destiny. I’m a 21 year old college student now and can’t play as much as I used to, but I’d love to relive of some of my childhood. How much has changed since the taken king? Is it worth coming back? Does anyone have advice for finding a new community to game with? TLDR: Haven’t played since Destiny 1 Any advice on joining Destiny 2
Any advice on joining Destiny 2
If you’re thinking of really getting back into the game and spending money, I’d suggest finding someone who can show you the ropes. A fair amount has changed since D1. You’ll probably be able to grasp the basics since you played D1, but so much of this game isn’t properly tutorialized that unless you were there when it was changed then it can be difficult to understand certain mechanics, if for no other reason than the large amount of stuff that you need to keep track of. It doesn’t help that Bungie doesn’t update old content to match new standards. As an example, there are five raids in the game right now: Last Wish, Garden of Salvation, Deep Stone Crypt, Vault of Glass, and Vow of the Disciple. Because Bungie introduces new systems but doesn’t update old content with them, practically each raid has a different set of information you need to know about it. For example, all raids have challenges that rotate by encounter each week, but in order to do the Last Wish challenges you need to grab a bounty from Hawthorne. Deep Stone Crypt, Vault of Glass, and Vow of the Disciple have vendors at the end of the raid that let you target farm specific raid gear by spending spoils of conquest, a currency earned by playing raids. Last Wish and Garden of Salvation don’t have that. Vault of Glass and Vow of the Disciple have harder difficulty modes with adept weapon drops. Last Wish, Garden of Salvation, and Deep Stone Crypt do not. Only Vow of the Disciple weapons can be crafted. And that’s just one section of the game that suffers from this lack of updating over the years. There are plenty others. But at the end of the day the game is free to play now, so you could always hop back in and see if you can figure things out yourself without losing any money on it.
