<spoilers>“Your pale heart holds the key.”

Something the Witness said when addressing the Traveler. I know many have speculated on what could be inside the Traveler. A common theory I’ve seen so far is that it’s just a ship for the real Gardener rather than being the Gardener itself. Assuming the Witness isn’t the Winnower (which they might not be), there is no way of knowing what their motives are. I wonder if perhaps the Witness oversaw both the Gardener and the Winnower in the game to make sure nobody breaks the rules(like the Gardener did) and the (still loyal) Winnower is helping the Witness restore the Game. This line makes me think that there is something or someone inside the Traveler. Something the Witness wants. My new theory is that it’s some kind of secret that the Traveler is keeping from us. Something that proves the Gardener is wrong and make us question everything we think we know about it and ourselves. I am not entirely sure about any of this and most of it was thought of as I was typing but I’d love to hear some thoughts on all of this. Edit: my original was that the thing inside the Traveler was a machine that would restore the Garden Game. It has been disproven as it goes against the Winnower’s motives as portrayed in the Unveiling lore book. I still stand by my theory that the Witness is the balance between the Gardener and the Winnower. Another edit: something else the Witness said. “We have seen enough. Enough death. Enough life.” I believe the Witness has become impatient and dissatisfied with Humanity’s lack of progress in the bargain and thinks that the Gardener has officially lost the bet.

  • Indeed, my pale heart holds the key, but I am unkillable.

  • first off, i believe the situation we are in is far worse than you described since it's possible that Savathun has hijacked the chess-like game from The Witness and in consequence The Witness that once was present is now absent; thus The Witness no longer has the power to mediate the game between The Gardener and The Winnower. If the string theory is correct, then we exist in a multiverse. Whether or not Savathun can successfully take over all the universes that comprise the multiverse is unknown but what is known is that she has somehow managed to tie a knot in our universe given that she can time travel. As far as i know, time travel is only possible in a closed/looped space-time system. I do not believe that the multiverse is composed of infinitely many closed/looped systems, just the one that we are in presently for the last 7+ years of Destiny. This would explain why The Gardener and The Winnower both shared their powers of light and darkness with us because they probably agreed that the Witness has been kidnapped and someone is ruining the game: sabotaging it and looting their throne worlds. That's what is at stake: the defeated chest pieces that The Gardner and The Winnower have in their throne worlds. Visualize a chess match from start to finish and you'll know what i mean. Oryx was able to reanimate and take the pawns, rooks, bishops, knights, etc. and use them to build an army. Savathun is now able to loot anyone and everything and manifest the destiny she wants and probably has been since the beginning. Who knows tho. I am far from being anyway near a lore expert. Im just casually blending real world with virtual world stuff.

    • There has never been anything in the lore to suggest there is anything to balance between the two gods

        • You know those resonant splinters, from the public events? They seem to depict The Traveler inside of a pyramid. I wonder, perhaps The Traveler is the ‘pale heart’. The story of the gardener and winnower does indicate that they were somewhat harmonious before the rule break.

          • I think the entity inside the traveler is similar in form to the witness. The speaker could have been a disciple of the traveler entity or a clone. Just a thought.

It’s been a while since I read this stuff. But my understanding is that while the gardener decided they would break the rules first in this new iteration of “the game of life”. Both sides, ie the winnower, agreed on the new rule change. That they could break said rules. Hence the use of paracausal for every darned thing. Both the light and the dark can bend and break the laws of physics and/or reality. Which is why the vex are so annoyed: they couldn’t simulate either correctly
