There is a certain kind of person who will see morality, restraint, etc.... in the face of aggression not as a sign of good character. But as a sign of weakness...and that weakness will inspire further aggression. Every kid who has been bullied on the schoolyard has lived this. That bullies will ratchet up the abuse against those who do not fight back....until they show they are willing to fight. 2. Never start fights....but always finish them. IF you don't (if you don't make it clear that you are a "hard target"), they'll be back for another go at you. Unfortunately Ukraine is learning that hard lesson right now with Russia. When you find yourself in a fight, that is not the time for navel-gazing and a debate about the morality of fighting. At that point, the fight is on and you have two choices. Fight back with every thing you have, and end it......or submit. Whatever your choice, be prepared to live with the consequences. If you choose to submit because of personal fear or fear of the fall out? They be prepared for the consequences that flow from that submission. You will lose respect of others....and other predators will see you as an easy target. If you choose to fight, then accept that consequences of that choice. Standing up for your dignity and your personal integrity will likely be seen as a problem or as "disruptive" by others...and there may be negative consequences for that as well. But once you get a certain number of years on you, you come to realize that selling out or compromising your dignity is rarely worth what you get in return for it. I'd rather be hated for who I really am....than loved and admired for something I'm not. YMMV. Guardians choose to fight.
