that is normal
The catalyst also says that you have to do Strikes, Gambit or Crucible
There is nothing there about Nightfalls
Including nightfalls for the catalyst quest came later

Actually if I remember correctly it used to work with Nightfalls but it was really bad and was better to do Gambit Prime
