I totally agree that we should be able to apply shaders to exotic weapons. However, adding the ability to do this I imagine may interfere with Bungies business model including selling exotic ornaments in Everis store. People would be less likely to buy weapon ornaments if it just needed a colour change. I don't see this being the same experience with armor.
Ornaments are there to enhance the look of a particular weapon not to change it to something it is not. For example it would be strange or impossible to shoot if it had a scope from an ornament where there isn't one on the actual weapon. Practically comes first for me on this one.

Ornaments should offer a substantial change to the gun's model whether that's in the form or texture changes, shape changes, or other small details. Hawkmoon's ornaments both offer a significant change to the model, Chaperone's are smaller, but offer different textures and decals. Vex's ornament applies a chrome shader.

My previous comment was in direct relation to Nimunes idea presented... "An ornament can change weapon model or even the weapon scope." I don't agree with this concept of weapon ornament. I don't completely disagree with your comment that ornaments can significantly change the look of the gun but all ornaments including Hawkmoon still retain the weapon archetype, general shape and scope placement. Your not going to suddenly see an ornament with silencer attached to the Hawkmoon barrel, right? Vex's ornament, like you said, is keeping pretty much the same weapon look but changing the shader and this shows that Bungie intends to bank in this regard. I don't see them changing they way skins work and giving up on Everis store profits anytime soon.
