Artificially extended gameplay loop to keep players playing. It's akin to gambling. You keep going, keep going, always losing, then you get a small amount of something that gives you that tiny dopamine rush and then you're hooked. You keep playing and tolerate getting nothing because of the feeling you get when you do get something. Bungie know this all too well and artificially extend that to extreme levels because they have nothing else they can call a gameplay loop. Give everyone loot, then they won't play as much and they might not spend as much money - especially when they insist on FOMO and really dodgy paywalls like the 30th anniversary pack. If you stop caring about loot and just try to enjoy the game for what it is, you'll either have more fun or end up playing something else instead.

 •
Give everyone loot, then they won't play as much and they might not spend as much money
Maybe I’m an outlier here, but not getting the loot I seek is what tends to drive me away. Grinding for seasons on end for a particular world drop that never appears is immensely frustrating. Even worse is when they let you target farm for something through the umbral decoder and you still can’t get anything close to resembling the drop you want. I’ve stuck around during times of drought literally just to play with weapons/rolls/builds that excite me. It’s the frustration that comes along with the nagging feeling that my time isn’t respected that ultimately pushes me away for extended periods. I just can’t imagine a scenario where someone is like, “GOLLY, look at all of this glorious loot I’ve earned! I think I’ll celebrate by not playing the game at all!”

 • I agree completely. Not getting the weapon after 30 attempts makes me question why I bother to play. If I didn't like the group of people I play with, I wouldn't still be playing. Meanwhile I have helped many in my clan get the weapon and the catalyst for it. Only a couple of us don't have Vex at this point and if RNG was really random we would all have it by now. The thing Bungie doesn't understand is most people would play even more when they have that weapon. When I got Whisper of the Worm I went back into that mission countless times to help others get the weapon, ship and catalyst. I also tried to solo many things I wouldn't normally try with the help of infinite ammo. When a weapon is that good and really fun to shoot you are going to play more, not quit playing because you got the weapon.
