Agree 100% I used it recently after buying the ornament for dust. I love its iconic sound, it still feels good but not great in the heavy slot. It is a special weapon in D1 so why not in D2?

  • In Destiny 1, most high damage weapons were specials and heavies were used only for ad control, obviously there were a few exceptions. In Destiny 2, heavies do the most damage and specials are used for ad control. If you want Whisper to feel like whisper, it needs to remain a heavy, but it needs to actually be able to do it’s job: boss damage. Right now, it just can’t compete for damage with other weapons, like swords or linear fusions. Making it a special Bungie would reduce its damage, not make it compete with other amazing dps options. If you want it to feel like D1 keep it a heavy, but undo the nerf or increase it’s grit multiplier against bosses.

  • Heavy weapons werent mainly used as add clear tough. They were used as boss and elite killing. Sleeper Swords Ghorn Rockets with tripod / cluster Were the most common. While yes we had some special weapons used for dps -black hammer -Wotm sniper - even lord or wolves But they were mainly used when you were out of heavy ammo during the dps phase (Some bosses were better with ranged/no reload weapons like warpriest or golgoroth but besides that...heavy spam)

  • Some quotes from an old Reddit post asking about weapons for Kings Fall: I use a rocket launcher for both oryx and daughters but mostly just for add clearing, not boss DPS. Honestly, with either ToM or a good sniper and your primary it's plenty of DPS. I run a heavy machine gun if I'm gaze grabber. rockets would be good for add clearing, but that's about it. Out of all my full clears, I've never had a use for a rocket launcher. They just can't touch sustained DPS which is needed to take down the bosses. You're going to want a sniper for DPS for a majority of the raid. LMG for heavy, swords aren't necessarily great for the raid but definitely have their place for add clearing You'll obviously want a sniper, and an LMG would be the most helpful for sticky situations involving adds overrunning you. Everyone disagrees with me when I talk about how the purpose of the special and heavy slots have switched. This is how the game was.

  • Because kingsfall was special by design. You couldnt really use everything you want against these bosses. It was long range / precision dps or nothing. But kingsfall wasnt the only raid :p And you arent going to tell me that swords sleeper and rockets werent bullying aksis/atheon/templar/crota/ir yut/(the first boss of wotm forgot his name) Dps wasnt really THE thing in kingsfall, it was a heavy mechanic raid at that time, and diffiuclty came from it.

  • Swords for Aksis because of the leg glitch… The rest was all snipers, and maybe sleeper. I’ve never once run anything for Wrath or Vault of Glass bosses except a sniper or Sleeper. Rockets only work for Crota because his shield doesn’t have a crit, giving it better burst damage. Or Yut still required a sniper in every team I did it with, or maybe one guy would try razelighter.

Soo...you are telling that nobody was using ghorn/crota rocket launcher on atheon ? And as for aksis legs it wasnt a glitch. It was just like a tenebrion. Each legs had their own HP. Meanign rockets/swords were the best. Snipers were used when you had no ammo left And wtf ir yut with snipers XD. This little thing moving everywhere needed a quick melt and had to be easy to kill x)

  • Not anyone I played with… Remember that I’m discussing Taken King/Rise of Iron era where Gjallerhorn was much less prevalent. Also, it’s pretty obvious that using an AOE attack to hit as many parts of the bosses hit box at once, basically quadrupling the damage, was not intentional, so it’s an exploit. No team I’ve ever played with used rockets for Aksis. Before someone found the Dark Drinker exploit, and my first few runs, we used snipers like we had every other boss in the game, nightfalls, raids, all of it. Snipers were always the best weapons for sustained DPS, with the only competition being sleeper.

  • It never was an exploit to maximize your dps on a glorified tenebrion. It is basically a feature. Why a boss shouldnt have multiple damage spots ?

  • You literally name the 2 exceptions as why heavies were meant for damage… Yes, clearing yellow bars is part of the ad control role. For every raid boss in Kings Fall and Wrath besides Orxy, snipers were the best weapon, and even in Oryx snipers were best for the Ogres. You can’t compare Destiny 1 weapons to now and say specials weren’t DPS in Destiny 1. Go play Destiny 1, rockets were pea shooters compared to what they are now, again with the exception of Gjallerhorn.

  • Its not a special weapon in D1 its a different gun, it originally worked like black hammer and its catalyst made it godly. It deserves to stay a heavy since its so powerful, blame bungie for not making it viable in content

Yup without the catalyst it would actually do less damage than my slug shotgun. And i was using both weapons at the same time on the inverted spire nightfall. The numbers were basically the same with whisper having like 3 or 5% more damage than my slug that didnt had vorpal (DSC shotty).

  • And you think thats a reason to move the gun. As in instead of advocating a damage buff for it deserve its spot you would rather them just swap the guns spot. Just because a variation if the gun was in that slot for D1 doesn’t mean it should be in D2, reworks to the gun boosting precision damage could easily help. What doesn’t help is many encounters in D2 have been mid-range encounters.

  • Nope i never said i wanted to move it to the special slot. I more on the side that wanna give it back infinite ammo as nothing lives long enough to survive the 23 shots of whisper. Or at least make it so 3 shots landed refund 1 or 2 shots to the reserves. So it would still be a sustained dps but very ammo efficient. But atm, nothing justifies using this gun. It either need a rework or a place to shine. (Because basically every encounter prevents you from using this gun...like templar making you waste a shot because lf the detain.forcing you to reload...then aim again for a few seconds...) And also we mainly have burst dps phases now...wich is the opposite of what bungie wanna do now when it comes to dps. It has become very rare to not have a boss with immune phases/low dps timer requierient huge damage burst over sustained dps (and also whisper isnt even that great in terms of dps compared to what we have)

  • Its still not a reason to move the gun, it just needs a damage buff for precision damage
