Trials is end game. But the irony is that Trials is less sweaty than Control is right now. Which shows you how broken regular Crucible is and how hostile it is to new players.

  • I usually think you say some silly things But control is less enjoyable to me than trials has been. And I’ve only solo queued trials this season. Control suffers from wild skill creep early in the week while the casuals/average players are off doing their PvE grind. On top of that lobby balancing makes control an absolute nightmare to play. If you are a talented player you get forced to hard carry in basically every playlist available. The worst of which is control because hard carrying the 5 worst in the lobby is just hard. If you aren’t all that talented then it’s luck of the draw. You either end up on the team with the guy doing the carrying, and you get farmed by basically the whole enemy team Or you end up playing against the outlier in the lobby. And he farms you all game while his teamates offer you little to no enjoyable resistance. B

  • I get so happy when I spawn into an already half completed crucible match or start getting stomped on because it means the suckfest that is crucible will end that much faster. I tried everything for awhile to make the matches go faster. You have no idea how gloriously happy I was when I found out Gambit is just a one-and-done now. Less time in the suck.

  • When I play 6v6 I end up topping the leaderboard with like 35 kills minimum I just don’t find it as fun as 3v3

Can you explain this? Because it makes no sense. What makes control more sweaty than trials?

  • The combination of the intensity of play (stat-farming) and the even wider variations in skill levels because of the lack of any skill stratification. The irony was that Trials—-post-flawless mm—was more fun to play than Control is.

  • How does a wider range of skill levels make it more sweaty than trials for the average player? Can you link any sources or video clips, something other than a baseless claim?

  • I take it you’ve never played Control when a three stack of GM or Master level players are playing as a unit, or a six stack clan team of good players are deathballing around the map…. …it’s why skill creep is slowly destroying Control (like it always kills Trials), and why complaints are at an all-time high.

  • I only play control and trials And it's not more sweaty than trials. Maybe we're taking the word sweaty to mean different things.

  • Or we’re at different ends of the skill curve. Because the experience of playing Control for an average player these days is miserable.

  • The experience of playing Control is awful for anyone, including the top players. I used to love to play 6s but don’t even do it anymore unless it’s for pinnacles and I’m top 1%, not that I’m saying it means anything, I’m just saying it still isn’t fun if you’re “good.”

I don’t doubt it. Which is why I keep trying to make the case that CBMM isn’t really in anyone’s long-term interests. As skill creep advances…the matches get sweatier and sweatier. Connection quality deteriorates because of low population numbers ….. …and I’ll bet the tactics you see get cheesier and more annoying as people fight to keep their stats from reverting back to the mean (1.0 kd). I can believe that nobody is really having much fun at that point. Cause the matches start to feel like a Lighthouse round with bad connections.

  • Not only that, but I feel like lobby balancing paired with the mercy rule changes around Beyond Light sucked any remaining fun out of 6s for me. I get paired with the worst 5 players on the team and it isn’t fun for me, and I know it can’t be fun for them. Combine this with the mercy rule changes and it’s just lopsided matches all the time, especially in IB where the mode exacerbates these problems.

Is that the true average kd of current players? Or is that the on paper assumed average? Also is kd really the best metric to measure skill?

  • The average of the average player. What you are referring to is skill creep.

  • The average of the average sounds like it might be a small population. 70% of the 70% is under 50% As for skill creep. Maybe? Not 100% on what skill creep is

No. Its understanding the Pareto Principle, Population statistics....and skill creep. TLDR: You don't get a pool of players in a situation like Control that is truly representative of the distribution of skill across the entire player base (the true average). What happens is that the best 20% of the player base, plays 80% of the matches. Part of the reason why they are better than everyone else, is they PLAY more than anyone else. So you are far more likely to run into them in a lobby, than their frequency in the player base would suggest. Lost Sols 2 years ago did a fantastic job of showing this when he posted an analysis of 50 consecutive matches in QP. His data showed that 1 out of every 2 lobbies had at least one player of Master or GM level (Elo >2000) on each team. About one out of eery 3 matches had MULTIPLE players of that skill level.....being paired with players at the bottom of the scoreboard who had Elos of 800-1000 (around TRUE Average). This mismatch that is allowed to occur in the absence of skill stratification is what causes SKILL CREEP. The players at the bottom of the skill pool have a MISERABLE time of it. The game is not enjoyable....so they leave. Then the next lowest echelon of players see THEIR enjoyment damaged at the skill pool DISTILLS, and VERY high skill players start being encountered enve more frequently.....they get frustrated....and they leave. THEN the same thing happens to the next echelon.....as the skill pool distills even further. Soon you aren't dealing with 5% beer or 12% malt liquor. You're drinking 150 proof rotgut. That's what keeps killing off Trials. The combination fo the predatory format....the lack of skill stratification (until this season), and the fact that Winner-takes-Everything in terms of toot and rewards. Let to skill creep that took off like a F1 race car. (While it being only for the "Best of the Best" made for good marketing, it led to a play lest that self-destructed). By the end. The talent pool was so concentrated...and so small...that all you had left were the sweat lords and the cheaters. Everyone else LEFT. ...and the same thing is Happening to Control. Just not as quickly. At some points last season, Crucible was struggling to pull more players per day than Gambit was. That's how bad it was getting....and who unsustainable this all is. Once Bungie has all the kinks worked out of crossplay? Expect to see a return of SBMM to Control. Because that is the only way that Crucible can continue to grow, add new players...and keep fromdying off long term.
