VI: Threats Outside and Within

Tetra The bag is ripped off her face, and the Huntress blinks against the beams of light shooting at her. It is the only light in the room, and the rest is black as night. Tetra looks down and sees her arms tied behind her to a wooden chair. She feels like a prisoner. “You came here to ask for assistance,” Jae says somewhere in the dark. “But we still don’t know if we can trust you.” Tetra rolls her eyes. “Oh, please. You lead me all the way to your outpost and tell me you can’t trust me? We’re miles away from the cell block that I need to get into.” “And why?” “There's a prisoner named Rys. My Ghost says he can restore my memories from before this apocalypse, using Warlock magic…or whatever.” “How could he heal your mind if he has no Light?” “Maybe he can’t. If that’s the case we’ll bring down the Cabal and do whatever we need to do to get rid of that cage on the Traveler. Whatever needs done.” “You are persistent to a fault.” “Thanks?” “It will be your downfall. The City is lost, the Traveler is abandoned, and the Cabal are hunting us as we speak. We are alone. There is no one to save us here.” “Except us. And we can save ourselves, Jae. Help me save all Guardians.” A long pause ensues, and Jae steps quietly out of the dark in front of Tetra, hands clasped behind his back. He leans down to her. “No,” he whispers. “I will not help you.” Tetra’s spirit sinks. She slumps in her chair, defeated. “But. I will allow you to bring a small squad of soldiers with you. I myself will not help you. I cannot be linked to any of your activities. My boss would…not be happy. Is that understood?” “Yes. Thank you, Jae.” A door suddenly slams behind Tetra. “Fallen outside, sir! Raiding party!” Jae spits and quickly unties Tetra. “Go. We’ll hold them off while you make your way to the City. Stay alive, Guardian. Your soldiers are in front. She nods as he hands her back her pistols. “Eyes up.” Without a moment’s hesitation she rushes for the door in front of her. Jae watches her leave before he loads his revolver and cocks the hammer back, his face set with resolution at the sound of Fallen behind the door he faces. “Die, whelps.” Rys “Why do you do this?” he asks. “Because I enjoy it.” “That’s all?” “Yes.” “Rys,” Tetra calls from a distance. “Hurry up!” “I’m coming.” The Warlock opens his eyes to see nothing before him. Just black shadows. He floats limp in the air. He is surrounded by nothing. “I am alone.” “You are not alone, Rysedian.” Who was that voice? His Ghost? It sounded like him, but it was too different. No, it wasn’t Damian; it was familiar, though. “You have never been alone.” Who WAS it? “You have never been by yourself…until now.” The voice changes from masculine to feminine, and the shift sends chills down Rys’ spine. “Now you are most assuredly alone. You have never been brought so far from all you love and admire. You will gain nothing trying to free yourself. You are nothing.” Rys replies, “I have never been alone.” “You have never been alone. You have always been alone. You are strong. You are weak. You are at peace. You inspire hate.” “I am not alone! Stop this!” The voice pauses. “You possess great Light. You possess great Dark. Ever balanced. Ever tilting.” Rys screams and wakes up. He’s still in the Cabal prison, his guard standing over him like a proud champion. “You are breaking, Warlock.”
