They directed the pressure to spend money not on new players but old players with tons of gear. There's no incentive for someone just starting to engage the system at all and veterans have hundreds of reasons to spend even more money on the game sitting in their collections. It's either incompetence or blind greed that created this issue.

Indeed. How much disrespect can one company show toward its long term players? Bungie is going to find out. Just before they lose all those players and end up another washed up company, probably bought by Activision out of sympathy. Unfortunately, that won't happen. There are too many kids with parents who will buy them silver, and that continues to feed the greed that bungie doesn't even bother to hide anymore.
