The player base for Gambit is not exactly high and the involvement of stasis has damaged a lot of PvP players(not myself since I happen to enjoy crucible). So if crucible is hurt then it makes sense for Gambit to go away. Especially if the Drifter remains an important part of the story ahead. He will have other major roles but I think Gambit is one that may go away in time, or be replaced. An assumption not a fabrication.
