Hi there. The Beyond Light campaign is started by going to the Europa map and starting the mission called "Darkness's Doorstep" to rescue Variks. If you are clicking on the icon next to Europa when looking at the planets, that is just an advert for people who don't own the Deluxe edition.
You've already confirmed you own the season pass. To progress after the season intro Battleground, you need to visit the HELM in the tower. You can find it up and to the left of the courtyard fast travel point. If you don't see it, complete the Darkness's Doorstep mission and then check again.
Note that progress on both campaigns and season quest are character specific. You need to repeat them with each character.

I've not seen any missions next to variks after completing said mission. As for the battlegrounds I have done one and gained access to the tower but one of the vendors, the crow I think, had items I apparently could not access as I apparently did not have the season pass?

After completing the first mission, you'd need to go back and talk to Variks. He will give you the Beyond Light campaign quest to do the next mission, which is "The New Kell". There will then be a mission flag just outside his room to start it. If he has nothing for you or the flag says "Requires Beyond Light", then what platform did you purchase Beyond Light on? The inventory of Crow in Tangled Shore is only accessible to players who owned Season of the Hunt. Do you not see the HELM node on the Tower map?

I don't remember seeing a flag outside. I'll double check later today. I definitely purchased it via Steam on the account that is the one I am trying to play the game on. Then isn't it a bit missleading for it to just say that I am unable to access it due to not having the season pass? I did after some friends took me through one of the battlegrounds.

Go to HELM and interact with the war table. There will be a short cutscene and you’ll be instructed what to do next. Note that when you get the Decoding the Darkness quest, you do not need to focus an Umbral engram. Your first character gets one for free and you then just need to decode it to complete that quest. Alt characters will not be given a free Umbral and have to acquire one from activities.
