Hate to be the technical guy but that doesn’t sound like it proves they are sentient. It’s very well possible crow meant it in a sense that he found the situation creepy even for a deranged zombie.
That being said I do think that there are a couple possible explanations for “intelligent” scorn.
Option A: the puppeteer theory.
All scorn with exception to Fikrul are just puppets more akin to animals and any personality or sentience they display is them merely reflecting his own thoughts. In the case of the barons they’d all be mental reflections of how Fikrul perceived his comrades in life and their scorn forms just mimic his perception.
Option B: day of the dead theory.
Like zombies in Day of the dead the Scorn are able to develop individual personalities and only act as individuals when they overcome their based instincts. The barons somehow retained their original minds likely thanks to Fikrul.
Either way the scorn are best boys.

Option B is more likely Since we know the Barons were full on scorn as well, meaning at one point they were dead but then revived by dark ether. Yet they still all had their personalities in tact

Personally I think A makes more sense to me since some lore tabs (don’t recall the name but it involves variks experimenting with corrupted ether) depict the scorn being used like literal puppets. But I can see the logic for B. It just makes more sense to me why a random scorn grunt would call crow father despite the likelihood that that’s their first time meeting. But it is possible he heard about him.

It's weird though, I really don't think they're just reanimated flesh (despite the reanimated Machinist name) considering we've seen Scorn do complex tasks like building, worship, chanting, organize raiding party's etc.

That’s kinda why i see them as being divided between two states. This is just my interpretation of their behavior. Sort of like consciousness, when fikrul is active and leading them (as in not dead) they function as pieces of a greater body acting together and able to carry out more complicated strategies and task. When he’s dead or incapacitated though they revert to a more subconscious level, still able to operate tools and make decisions but acting more on instinct or more precisely the Fikruls unconscious thoughts. Kinda like a dream if you will. That’s why I imagine they haven’t made any big plays in the lore, because as long as we keep fikrul down he can’t really organize them and they remain a crazed mob acting on information as though it’s all in his head.

Hmm it's a interesting theory I'll give you that, but that's really implying that the Scorn are less undead but more hive mind-esc. There's really no mention of Fikrul elevating a Scorns intelligence But then again we're in the realm of speculation so there are no right answers to begin with

True. But who’s to say they can’t be both. After all at the end of the day we are talking magic bug zombies. And besides, all corrupted ether originates from Fikrul so perhaps that connection ties into it all somehow.

If you're correct it would be a funny little parody of the travelers relationship with Guardian's When the traveler was captured we lost our light In your scenario when Fikrul dies the scorn loose their mental functions
