You apparrently know nothing about video game design. 1) objective is presented 2) path to completion is revealed 3) side-activities (loot gathering) are accomplished to make completion of original objective possible or easier or more fun 4) original objective is completed 5) accomplishment is felt by player Bungie is right now failing on even presenting players with this simplistic model of game design. The fact that "every reward or completion is eventually useless" is irrelevant. A good game provides at least temporary satisfaction of the player meeting objectives. Like a crossword puzzle. If you don't like it... Get bent and don't play video games. Go do a crossword puzzle or rot.
