Weren’t these two behind technologically, or was that just Cara? I ask because unless they had some sort of really fast transportation, I think the trip back would’ve probably been enough time to have already recovered; it didn’t sound like any of this happened recently, after all. Though, I suppose that also depends on where along the way she talked to Dally. Besides that, great job as per usual! It’s no fair that you’re good at drawing, and writing. Most of us only get one or the other. :p

 • Ha! I’m special then, because I’m good at neither!

 • Mm, no, Errol and Skye aren’t really behind technologically. It’s really just Cara who has, like, almost zero access or interest in technology. Dislay be right! This story happened about a week ago, right after Dally and Skye spoke. They started on the base and later decided to talk somewhere more private. Thank you! It’s such a blast to be able write and draw. Although, I believe that everyone has the ability to learn to write and draw if they have the time and interest to practice it! It took me, like, six years before I finally got my horses not to look like sausages.

I’ve always been envious of you artsy types, though! What I wouldn’t give to be able to paint! I’d even go so far as to say I’d give up my ability to write for it! But I can’t. *takes hypothetical masterpiece off the wall and carelessly tosses it behind me. It hits several things along the way, making quite a mess*

Lol, I don’t think it’s always how well you “art” that matters, it’s if you enjoy it. That’s pretty much the only thing that keeps me going in my drawing. I’ve also found that when trying to draw something a specific way doesn’t work, using a different technique or looking at it from a different perspective really helps!

Swords, crossbows, axes, etc. are all either super techy and advanced, or completely traditional. Bows are the only ones that ever hit that middle ground, at least from my experience. If I didn’t, I’d have dropped it by now! But, back in my aforementioned art classes, it was just so relaxing whenever we painted anything. I loved it! And, I’d love to just, express what’s in my head into something I can see. As much as I love writing, it’s easy to get caught up in that feeling of not making any progress. Like, sure, the page count is increasing, but that’s just a number, and the progress you make feels kind of.. Abstract. In the same case with a drawing or a painting, though, you can see your progress right smack on the paper/canvas/etc.! Now, you might be thinking “Aifos, you sound like you enjoy painting! That’s my point! Do it! Paint!”, but the issue is I’m a very self-motivated person. I hold myself up to a standard, and if I can’t meet it I get very frustrated. I took quickly to writing, it came naturally to me, but visual art simply does not. So I get frustrated for not being able to actually draw what I want the way I want it, and then ask for help, but I ask for too much help, and that’s why Lee doesn’t like me anymore. :p

When I was coming up with Skye’s character, I just thought that a bow and arrow would be pretty cool.
Now, you might be thinking “Aifos, you sound like you enjoy painting! That’s my point! With every drawing I make, I have a specific image in my mind that I want on a piece of paper. Truth is, I never get to point, and it is very frustrating. For that drawing of Cara, her nose is too long and weirdly round at the tip, and I wanted her face shape to be a little different. Just yesterday I was working on drawing; I didn’t get the lines where I wanted them to be so I just stopped. It hard even for professional artist to paint/draw exactly what’s in their head, too. It just takes a bunch of practice; there’s still a lot I can’t do for the life of me, and it will probably take years before I get to that point. It’s cool to compare your drawings from this year and last year, because then you really see the progress in your technique and all that! However, again, I understand just stopping. There was a period of time I didn’t draw at all. And that’s okay! Your particular gift is in writing, and that’s awesome! If you ever decide to tap into a little art again, though, feel free to PM me with questions. I absolutely don’t mind a ton of them :P

I was about to name a few of my favorite techno-classic weapons, when I realized it. :p
Oh, no, I understand all of that! I mean, I know we tend to be overly critical of our own work, but hearing it sounds like you have some of the same issues I have makes me feel there is some sort of chance I could get up to that level too someday! But, how do you actually improve? When I go back and look at my old stuff, I don’t really see much improvement. It always feels like it’s at that same level of mediocrity that it was before. Maybe I just don’t have an artistic enough mind to pick up the improvements... I’ll keep that offer in mind. Everyone I’ve asked for help doesn’t seem to talk to me as much anymore, though, so I don’t think I’ll take you up on it. :p Plus someone keeps taking my pencil. I keep it inside a bag, inside a binder, inside of another bag, so I’m sure I’m not just losing it.. >.>

 •
Goodness gracious, my grammar was dreadful in my last message :/
Hm... I guess what I did is look back at my past drawings and figured out what areas made them not look they way I wanted them to. For instance, for a long while my people and animals looked quite unnatural. So, I studied the shapes that make up their bodies (like the circles in a horse’s, and the rectangular shapes in a human’s) and sketched it out. Pretty much everything I draw starts out as a bunch of shapes, then I add the lines and move from there. Shading was another big thing, and I’ve improved a bit with that simply by studying real life. (What color does a horse’s mane glow in the sunlight? Does a person’s arm rotate in a complete circle? How can that circle help me make my knight’s arm look more natural?) Watching how other artists on YouTube draw things help as well, taking certain principles and applying them to my own style. It sounds kind of complicated when I read all that, but it really does help. Another thing that’s helped me is to not condemn my artwork until I get closer to the end. It’s impossible to draw/paint something perfect in one night. Even just a little improvement is a big accomplishment! Again, it took me six years of practice to get to a certain point, and during literally half of that I saw little development. It just takes time. I... hope that helps. It’s kinda hard to put it all into words. However, you don’t have to be afraid to ask questions! I honestly won’t mind, let the flood come! :) l’m in no way a professional yet, but maybe I can offer a few pointers. That is, if you can find the pencil thief. How rude to steal a pencil with such great potential!

 •
Seems fine to me. >.>
The shapes method would probably help me out a lot if I could get the hang of it. I always either draw so many shapes I might’ve well have just drawn the body outright, or I draw so few that I can’t properly visualize how to put them together. Shading is one of my biggest problems. I’ve tried to pay attention to it both in real life, and in cartoons, but while I understand how the light reflects and deflects and all that, I can never properly capture it on paper. I can usually simplify the cast shadows down, but I can’t usuall even get simplified shadows done on the objects themselves. >.< Hm.. Well, I might throw one of my old drawings your way, and ask for some advice. I actually need to throw you a PM anyway, so maybe I can use that as a reminder! :p All this artsy talk has made me want to draw something, too, so I might grab a new pencil while I’m at work! ^-^

 • Oof, yeah, it can be hard to know where to put shapes and where not to put shapes. That’s actually why I never used them for the longest time. If you want, I can share a few of my sketches to show you what I do for shapes and shading! Please do! I’d love to help where I can. And, if you do take up the pencil, good luck! It can be so much fun to doodle while you’re working :P

 • That would actually be pretty helpful! Especially for human forms! Knowing what shapes to build humans with would be nice! I want to say shading would be helpful, too, but it’ll probably go over my head... Again. Oh, I didn’t mean grab the pencil to doodle at work. I move boxes around; that’d be a good way to get fired. :p But, I work at a store, so I could nab a pencil on my way home.

 • I’ll send you a couple pics tomorrow :D And there’s a lot more craziness to shading, so I wouldn’t go into the deep details. However, I can shade a few basic shapes like spheres and squares and show you a bit of that if you change your mind. Even looking at those give you an idea of where shadows go on a person’s head or torso. Eep! Yeah, don’t doodle at work. O.o I hope you find a pencil, though!

 • It’s also worth noting I don’t actually want to be able to draw uber-realistically, too; I want to draw cartoons/comics/somethingelsealongthoselines, so if I could just get some simplified shading down that’d be a great help! I’ll go digging through my sketchbook tomorrow to see if I have anything presentable! I think I have one that I never quite finished that might work.
