Best advice, hit them with a stasis ability, then weaken then with your weapon and use a finisher.
You do have to damage them with stasis though, otherwise it won't count towards stasis kills. Also you team kills with stasis or using the above method count for you as well so long as you deal some stasis damage before they kill them

Or just use the stasis finisher in the season pass and you won’t have to worry about any complicated method.

That doesn't always work though. Both me and my friend got this challenge as well and we learned that if you damage them with stasis 1st then it always 100% counts vs weakening them and using a finisher.

Finisher on stasis always works. The confounding variable present for you and your friend was likely the use of the Javelin and Headbutt finishers which always deal solar or void damage.
