Currently, there are two issues I see that can be pretty detrimental to the future of the game, and the engagement of the players. Of course, these are my own opinions, but they seem to be pretty similar to a lot of others on here.
1. Power leveling. This constant loop of FOMO and power-leveling is old by now. I do think that removing and improving some sources of higher power gear is a step in the right direction, but it isn’t enough. There’s a point in which I believe that most people get sick of creating an amalgamation of terrible looking armor, just to get to a different level and complete an activity and get a gun that they may miss out on.
While some people will probably disagree with me on this (and that’s fine), customization on your character is very important to keeping the player engaged, as you are making your character the way you want to. With such a large gap in control of your character, you’re no longer playing the game how you would want to. It’s kind of like if someone took the Courier from New Vegas from your own play through, made it equip armor and weapons you don’t want, and getting rid of the Repair function. You don’t want your character to be this way, and you may want to keep some of the weapons and armor you acquire, but you have no choice. Once it wears out, once there’s a piece of armor that is a higher light than previously, you have to switch, or you’re handicapping yourself.
2. Sunsetting. I believe this is one of the more dire issues that has to be dealt with soon. Reasons being:
a. There’s no way Bungie is going to be able to pump out enough guns and armor every season to match the previous amount. They will try and circumvent this by re-adding old weapons back into the game, or reusing content and selling it back to us. I do not believe for a second that this is an acceptable business practice, and they won’t have another choice if they continue through with sunsetting.
b. There will no longer be an incentive to masterwork armor, unless you’re aiming for higher level activities, like Grandmaster Nightfalls. If the armor or legendary weapons are just going to become useless, why attempt in the first place?
I do believe that there is a solution to power creep, and the size of Destiny, but these are not the solutions. Honestly, the planets disappearing aren’t as big of a deal, but not so much the gear we acquire.
