[BNG] PC FPS Issues Megathread - UPDATE June 22

Hey, community. We're currently investigating FPS issues on PC.
UPDATES
June 22, 2021 Last night, AMD released Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.6.1 that fixes some Radeon Graphics products that were experiencing lower than expected performance in Destiny 2. AMD users may want to change their Settings > Preferred Software Version to Recommended + Optional for future updates.

June 3, 2021 In our TWaB blog post, we acknowledged that we made some major engine changes with the launch of Beyond Light - while working from home. Due to the pandemic, we haven't had access to our PC compatibility lab to do in-depth testing. We've been making improvements with each release even though they aren't called out in patch notes, and we're working with our partners to help address these issues and are optimistic about the future.

January 29, 2021 We have looked over the data post 3.0.2 launch: -- High-end users saw big improvements: we're about halfway back to pre-Beyond Light perf. -- Mid-range systems didn't see much improvement. -- Low-end and laptops didn't see much improvement. We're continuing to investigate and look for solutions toward better performance.

January 19, 2021 We released Update 3.0.2 that optimized Lighting on PC GPUs to help increase performance. -- Many folks have mentioned turning off the Shader Cache in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Does this help with performance?

December 14, 2020 We believe we found a few issues related to light probes that have led to GPU performance degradation. We're still investigating and hope to have a resolution in January.

Please use this thread to help us track down what is causing the issue by:
1. • Dear Bungie, Im one of the people with the cinematics performance problem. I can play the game on absolute maximum settings with NO problem at all. But when a cinematic - a video-sequence - starts my frames go from over 60 down to 3 FPS and stay like this. After short time Im geting kicked back to the menu due performance problems detected by the game. Most of those cinematics I can't even skip so Im unable to continue playing... I think that's mainly a problem for Win7 users (as I am) and propably got something to do with DirectX12... but that's just a suspicion some of us have - even that there are indeed some evidences and examples from other games what had this and similiar problems. But anyways... could you PLEASE fix this issue and keep us updated if you work on it and tell us when you were able to fix it? At the moment I think Im not the only one who feels like he's left alone with it and no one cares at all...

  • Since the launch of Beyond Light I've noticed a ~ 20% FPS drop in all the old locations. I also experienced (simultaneously with friends in my fireteam) two game crashes on Europa and random FPS drops. Ryzen 7 4800 H 16GB DDR4 memory RTX2060 6GB DxDiag: https://pastebin.com/wwXJyvnM

    • @BNGHelp6, You might try telling the devs they need to add options in the Video menu, to allow players to select the GPU and Display they want to play Destiny 2 on... a lot of games already do this. I believe this is one of the main issues since Beyond Light possibly mainly affecting multi-monitor setups, as D2 seems to bind to the primary display. Also unrelated, under Audio, add an option to select the Audio Output device D2 uses... instead of binding to the Windows default audio device.

    • Win7 here, couldnt watch any cinematic in beyond light! everything up to date, as far as Win7 allows it and everything running fine except the pre-rendered cinematics! just to remind you bungie... in your system requirements, win7 is stated as recommended, but completely destroyed the campaign for many users unable to watch cinematics!!

I am having terrible framerate problems in cutscenes. The game runs about the same as it ever did on my machine when in, say, Crucible or the Tower, but once a cutscene starts the framerate falls all the way to 2 FPS, rendering it unwatchable. Interestingly, however, these problems plague all cutscenes except the third one that plays on the first mission of Beyond Light (the one where you and Ghost are looking over the cliffside before the mission starts.) For some reason, that one, and only that one, runs fine. Reddit suggested disabling nVidia reflex in the cvars file, which made no difference. DxDiag: https://pastebin.com/4fFfX4eM I am using: i7 6700K ASUS Z170 Premium 32GB G.Skill Tridentz @ 3200 MHz GALAX GTX 1080 HOF running driver version 457.30 (though I was having the same problem on 441.87, one that I believe Reddit also suggested rolling back to.) Destiny 2 is stored on my Seagate Firecuda (SSHD.) Windows 7 64-bit <- This seems to be the common thread among most of us who have this problem, though there are also some people on Windows 10 who report having the problem.

        • https://pastebin.com/mkmj33MW Every prerendered cutscene (not just BL, happened also in a re-play forsaken), drops my frames to 2Fps since Beyond Light went live. Then I get a Rutabaga error that puts me back into orbit. Never had any problems before. The rest of the game seems to stay at a constant 60 Fps, though I haven't played it much because I can't play the campaign anyway.

          • I figured out my issue, its the resolution on my new monitor. My new monitor has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 and that causes frame drops in D2 for whatever reason. I dont want to change this because I paid for this monitor to use the whole thing, not to have D2 windowed to half my monitor and trying to play like that. I really do understand that making games is hard and im really trying to be nice but please for the love of god Bungie fix your shit. I love you but this has gone on for so long now and I just want good frames.

            • @BNGHelp6 With the update to Adrenalin version 20 for Radeon devices, the link for the Shader Cache is a little old. I have a Vega 64 and the problem for me was that the surface optimization cache was corrupted. I just disabled Surface Format Optimization under Gaming-> Destiny 2 ( profile ) -> Advanced ->Surface Format Optimization. This fixed all of my FPS hiccups. I might try deleting the files in C:\users\(user)\AppData\Local\AMD\DxCache and letting Adrenalin rebuild the cache in the future, but for now I'm just leaving disabled. Seems like something happened with the Beyond Light textures and AMD not detecting that they changed and properly rebuilding the cache. When the cache misses the FPS drops are considerable, and AMD tries to rebuild the cache causing black screens and beet. Seems like maybe some timeout issue between the client and the AMD drives, but turning off Surface Format Optimization just avoids all of this, at least on my AMD 1600 / 32 GB RAM / Vega64 Window 10 Professional 64 bit rig.

I have actually no problems with playing the game but critical problems are coming when a video sequence is playing. Im able to play the game in ultra settings with over 60 frames per second but in the moment a video-sequence is playing it drops down to 3 fps and most of the time Im not even able to skip it and have to wait until Im geting forced back to the menu with a error message appearing telling me that the game noticed FPS problems. This problem does not with all sequences happen but for the most and some of them as I've said Im not even able to skip. After I've tried to find a way to fix it and to get help from support or other users/players for several weeks now and still got not a single reply for my requests I'll give it a last shot here. I've to mention that I've tried the stuff (as long as it made sense) with no success or changes. Another user with a similiar problem told me that he believes the problem is caused by DirectX12 because it's only compatible with Win10 and Im not using that - and I think Im not the only one. Him and also another user told me they're not using Win10 as well so that's the thing we've in common. For me this theory makes sense! Here are my Specs:
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 v3 3.40 GHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti RAM: 16 GB OS: Win7 Pro
I play on PC with a bluetooth Xbox One controller. After dealing with big drops in framerate at seemingly random times, I eventually realized that it only occurred when the controller was resting in my lap, which meant the direct line between the controller and my PC's internal bluetooth receiver was blocked by my leg. It was 100% repeatable after that realization. I could block the direct line-of sight, the framerate would plummet from ~60fps down to the teens. I lifted the controller up to clear its view, and the framerate returned to normal. I repeated this a dozen times in various contexts-- in orbit, in the menu, on the ground, in the tower-- with identical results every time, although the starting framerate was higher in orbit and the menu than on the ground. I could also instigate the same framerate drop by standing up and walking my controller about 20-25 feet away from the PC. In summary, my framerate problems were directly tied to the strength of the bluetooth signal from my controller. I wonder if other people using bluetooth peripherals (controller, mouse, keyboard, headset, etc) might try reorienting their peripherals to have a stronger signal then a weaker signal to see if that causes similar framerate issues. I don't have this issue playing other games on my PC, only Destiny 2.

                • Like many, the biggest issue is less frames at the same settings as pre-Beyond Light. It’s most noticeable in the Tangled shore, specifically when looking at the group of buildings directly in front of the spawn point. I’ve narrowed down my issue to SSAO. 3D had been super stable until Beyond Light. Now it’s running roughly 20fps lower than it did before. Switching to HDAO instantly boosts my frames 12-15fps and stabilizes the drops. EVGA 1080Ti SC2 Hybrid i7 8700k @4.5 GHz all-cores 16Gb Corsair Vengeance 3200Mhz RAM

                  • When I played D2 on my old account prior to Beyond Light I was getting an average of about 140 FPS in out door open areas and 180 FPS in lost sectors, etc at 3440 x 1440 on max settings. I come back to the game with Beyond light and the best I can manage is 90 FPS out doors in open areas and 120 in lost sectors, ect. Same settings, fov, resolution, etc. i9-9900k ASUS ROG Strix OC 2080 ti 32GB 3200mhz RAM I always remember this game being well optimized but it's definitely taken a hit with this last update.

                    • I play at low settings, high only textures, environments and characters, fov 105. FPS drawdowns are almost everywhere: - For example, the Anomaly map in a closed match in the middle of the map I have - 90 FPS, previously it was stable 134-150, without a limit of 170-180, and so on all pvp mode maps, when I go to play control, the FPS remains the same and freezes appear -on any pvp map from 60-90 FPS when playing 6v6 and 3v3, previously they were above 100 -on any gambit maps 60-75 fps, previously it was 80-100 -EDZ 45-60 fps, previously 70-80 -FPS drop when using stasis Dxdiag https://pastebin.com/mnza7z8c

Tangled Shore is the biggest issue I seen. It is probably the best place to troubleshoot with hardware similar to all the people who have issues. This issue is a jarring current change. Something has changed somehow to affect game performance this much. Whether it be windows, gpu software, whatever it may be. 😯

There's a noticeable fps drop on Rusted Lands, at A capture point, no matter what settings game is running on and it has been like that before BL. And now we have broken Thieves' Landing in Tangled Shore and many other areas i can't remember of with weird impact on performance. Test a PC version properly before releasing new update. It's just beyond embarassing at this point https://pastebin.com/VFtM8uiV
