[BNG] PC FPS Issues Megathread - UPDATE June 22

Hey, community. We're currently investigating FPS issues on PC.
UPDATES
June 22, 2021 Last night, AMD released Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.6.1 that fixes some Radeon Graphics products that were experiencing lower than expected performance in Destiny 2. AMD users may want to change their Settings > Preferred Software Version to Recommended + Optional for future updates.

June 3, 2021 In our TWaB blog post, we acknowledged that we made some major engine changes with the launch of Beyond Light - while working from home. Due to the pandemic, we haven't had access to our PC compatibility lab to do in-depth testing. We've been making improvements with each release even though they aren't called out in patch notes, and we're working with our partners to help address these issues and are optimistic about the future.

January 29, 2021 We have looked over the data post 3.0.2 launch: -- High-end users saw big improvements: we're about halfway back to pre-Beyond Light perf. -- Mid-range systems didn't see much improvement. -- Low-end and laptops didn't see much improvement. We're continuing to investigate and look for solutions toward better performance.

January 19, 2021 We released Update 3.0.2 that optimized Lighting on PC GPUs to help increase performance. -- Many folks have mentioned turning off the Shader Cache in the NVIDIA Control Panel. • I'm running a 5700xt and noticed massive performance drops on some older planets (and Atrak's space section). Graphics settings had no impact on framerate, all tested on the Tangled Shore. On current AMD drivers I sat well below 40 fps on first drop into Thieve's Landing. I finally reverted to AMD's 2019 adrenaline software as I saw some folks mention disabling shader cache helps. The 2019 version has that setting. While I did see improvement, I don't know if the shader cache option is an issue. The Tangled Shore immediately jumped up to 50 fps and I further boosted that to my normal 70-80 by applying different graphics settings. Note, prior to this version of AMD software changing graphics settings did nothing for my framerate. I did see slightly worse frames on Europa, but only marginally and prior to tweaking my graphics settings alongside some minimal game stuttering. The stuttering was minimal, every so often it seemed to skip a frame or two. The character select screen suffered greatly. Hovering a character froze the screen for a solid 10-15 seconds. Hope this helps. I miss playing the game at 60+ frames.

  • Hey Bungie, I have to add to the chorus. I've been playing D2 for over a year and its been very enjoyable, until now. I'm playing on a 144 Hz monitor and until BL update I was averaging 135 Fps steady and never ever did i notice any delays anywhere. Now only very very few areas of the games do I get full 144 Hz, it doesn't even stay at 144 when I'm in orbit. For the first time ever I had my frame rate drop all the way down to 4Fps. It now even get drops down to mid 30's when I try to access the character screen, and it doesn't fill right away, just shows the loading circle. The most interesting thing to me has been that somehow the new game code does not utilize the graphics card fully. I always have the hardware monitor displaying the stats for all hardware on the 3rd monitor, and since BL i find my GPU rarely ramps up to full utilization. I have an old Vega 56 under-volted and OC'd to 1662 MHz with +100 MHz VRam. For example when I zone into Tangled shore, right on landing pad I get 45 to 47 Fps. The video card utilization is only at 50% to 74% at those frame rates. The clock speed fluctuates at around 1250 MHz. While moving it gets both worse and a bit better depending on mobs and what I'm looking at. That's just an example in one zone, in Tower its 57 Fps when zoning in, and so on and so on. What upset me the most is that I paid money to lower my frame rate. So I'd really appreciate a fix, please. DXDIAG: https://pastebin.com/3eks0MrT

  • Hey Bungie, Do you by chance see all the late model, high end components in here having issues with your game? Mine is similar and my son's is slightly lesser than and his is literally unplayable (at this time a waste of Deluxe DLC price), even after the above recommendations and several hours of other tweaks. You were able to go in and nerf the warlocks quickly, I have confidence that you can figure out what's taxing our high end machines. Please fix this ASAP!!

  • Main issue I'm experiencing are constant stuttering which is multiplied when I have software such as OBS open. When I open my character menu and while loading in and out of activities my game freezes for a number of seconds before returning to normal. My FPS is capped at 60 as I only have a 60hz monitor but my frames fall below this at times while the stuttering is going on. https://pastebin.com/0qwuVcFK Here are my PC specs: CPU: i9-9900K @3.6Ghz GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2080 TI GAMING X TRIO Memory - 64GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro @ 3200Mhz Motherboard - ASUS Prime Z390-P

  • Before BL i had straight 72 fps but now after BL cant maintain a solid 60 aswell as before BL temps and cpu usage were down low like really low like 50 - 60 degrees tops and 40 to 30% usage, thats why i played on laptop rather than PS4. But now its up to like 100% usuage and temps are crazy like 70-80+ degrees. Its not my pc as other games run exactly the same so BL must have done something that my PC doesnt like. Plz bungo fix, PS ily DXDIAG: https://pastebin.com/VnHzPb0u Specs: MSI GS65 Stealth 9SD Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz, 2601 Mhz, 6 Core(s) Nvidia Geforce 1650TI 16GB Ram again plz bungo fix, ILY

  • I have done most of these debugging steps. 3090 FE / 8700k dips to as low as 80 FPS in Europa. Average around 130. 1440p. Turning off vsync and uncapping frames I can get as high as 200. But the min is the same. The best help I have seen so far is following this guide: https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Article/49656 But using 2 instead of 0. That made the FPS drops less noticeable, but the frames do drop.

I hope this gets fixed soon. I have the game on the lowest graphic settings and it still uses 100% of my Gpu and Cpu. And I only get around 30-40 FPS.:(

      • After BL dropped, I've been getting less than 50 fps when I previously had around 70+ fps. My fps drops significantly during Crucible, Gambit, or any other activity where guardians are nearby. It drops from 40 fps straight to 1-3 fps when there are a lot of guardians nearby and especially when they use stasis. DxDiag: https://pastebin.com/DzWZ8yhB

Was seeing 150-180 fps in pretty much most areas except the cosmodrone before beyond light, now getting 110-120fps no matter where i go sometimes dropping into the 80s. Gtx 1080 - slight overclock I5-8400 32gb 3000mhz Game is loaded on an m.2 970 evo Playing at 1080p 144hz monitor I found this link maybe it will help Edit** The link i posted does help with stuttering, I'm not really seeing anymore big drops or stuttering, its staying consistent. However, I did not see a significant boost in my fps, still not close to where it was prior to beyond light.

      • DxDiag Information -------------------------------------------- https://prnt.sc/vq2jfk https://prnt.sc/vq2jsz -------------------------------------------- So right after beyond light update i was very excited to jump into the game and i see how amazing the new textures/lighting looks like however my dissapointment happened when i actually started playing... Right away i noticed that not only my fps dropped by at least 40 but even when fps seemed to look fine my game was stuttering like a 30 fps cinematic (not as bad but you get me) Not enjoyable to play This happens everywhere i go howwever there is specific places when it does not happen like in a lost sector here and there , few places in the dreaming city few places on the deepstone raid, in garden it happens all the time, same for last wish Like at this point its just everywhere and not noticable like -10% of the time Its just not fun... i love the game, id buy an rtx 3080 if i had the money and if the gpu was the problem but i honestly cannot afford it and it doesnt seem to be a problem client side. I understand it is hard to look at how the engine and the textures and the whole process, appreciate your work ,time and effort on trying to help us. I hope i can play this game smoothly again <3

      • I just upgraded from a 1060 3gb to an RX 6800 that came in 2 days ago and I have tested many games, yet Destiny 2 is the only one that has had terrible performance. I have tried numerous solutions from various sources, and nothing has worked. Average FPS is around 80, but some areas have dipped as low as 20 fps, and I cannot understand how that should be possible with my specs. dxdiag: https://pastebin.com/T4rrnnE9

      • MSI Geforce RTX 2060 i5 9600k 9th gen MSI Z390A-PRO Corsair Vengeance DDR4 16gb 165hz asus monitor Tried everything on your list. No help. Locked myself to 159 (gsync) and had been getting a locked 159 months prior to beyond light. After beyond light ive been getting between 110-139. On the winding cove edz, i would ALWAYS get locked 159. Now i get 120-139. Dont even get me started in pvp where it matters. Would always be 159, now its 90-130. Im a solid 20fps down minimum wherever i go and its infuriating to play the game like this. I see people with 3080s having problems too so it seems like upgrading wont really solve much. Keep us updated and please give us a fix. Turning everything to low literally makes zero impact on fps and im sure that shouldnt be the case

I believe I might have found the "cause" but no real way to fix without having access to a dev build to enable/disabled settings to verify. Issue stems from excessive GPU utilization, I use to run D2 at 1440p 100% render scale with everything High/Highest and still hit 144hz in most areas on a 1080Ti and 3700x, however even at the default spawn by Variks in BL, I get instant 100% GPU usage at lowest pre-set at 1440p 100% render scaling. It seems whatever was changed "graphically" from pre BL to post BL, is causing excessive GPU usage leading to far lower FPS than normal (hence many systems having this issue regardless of Vendor, model or CPU make meaning this has to be a underlying fault with graphical changes. I would prefer if people could verify this by simply noting GPU usage in low FPS areas to somewhat confirm my theory, Ive noticed much higher GPU usage on a lower preset Post BL than I did Pre BL and lighting is the only major graphical change to take place. This now leads me into my next theory which is Post BL Lightening was changed and I noticed this instantly how different it looked, it seems to be, either the game is rendering to many lights, point lights, dynamic lights and volumetric lighting effects hence the excessive GPU usage, especially in the Volumetric lighting effects or Volumetric particle effects (that effect light sources passing through) This is very noticeable in Scarlet Keep strike, compare Pre BL Scarlet Keep with Post BL Scarlet Keep and you will see instantly how Volumetric effects have effectively "double/trippled" in effects with even the Lowest preset on Post BL showing no signs of it being "turned off or heavily reduced" I have a very suspicious feeling the lower FPS drops are due to simply the GPU being used to much for arbitrary visual gains (mainly lighting which also effects shadows) these typically are the two biggest hitters to FPS in any game, and right now Lighting quality seems to have no real changed from Highest to lowest preset (meaning its a fixed value of some sort) To put this into perspective, the Variks spawn node in Europa, on my current preset of "lowest" at 1440p with a render scale of 25% I hit a GPU usage of around 75-80% which for a 25% render scalin at 1440p is utterly unacceptable considering the resolution scaling, to also confirm this result, I set the display size to 1280x720p with a render scale of 100% (so still 1280x720p) and still see excessive GPU usage in the 80% mark or higher which again for a resolution of this size means something is heavily taking GPU to much.

        • First of all, I play with a GTX 1050, 16 GB RAM, i7 7th gen, so I never pretended for the best, but still managed to get 50-60fps at low settings and it went all nice since Shadowkeep. When Season of Arrivals launched however, no matter the settings, I had regular fps drops to the low 10s. Then, after some weeks, the issue disappeared out of nowhere and things went back to normal in the last two months. Now, with Beyond Light, the game was even more smooth, I didn't even notice the rarer frame drops. You did a great job updating the overall user experience, from my point of view. So, where's the matter? It seems that hotfix 3.0.0.4 actually made things a little bit worse, I had occasional drops to even 15fps at random and then the game went back to being stable. So, please, see if the latest hotfix had something to do to that as well.

        • So yea... I play many other games without issue and go to pick up destiny 2 after not playing for years on Console due to crappy 30 FPS. Critical Specs I7-9700K 32GB Memory 3TB nvme m.2 Evo Plus RTX 3080FE Gsync Monitor @ 1440P 144hz Gsync and vsync on in Nvidia control panel Latest drivers installed I load in and get into the initial mission and I’m literally at 27 FPS..... made sure res and everything was set properly, switched on and off frame limiting, made sure vsync is off in game... same result. I have tried lowering settings all the way to low and it yields about 6 more FPS.. Meanwhile my buddy with a similar setup is at 144fps while we were in party together. Wtf bungie?
