[BNG] PC FPS Issues Megathread - UPDATE June 22

Hey, community. We're currently investigating FPS issues on PC.
UPDATES
June 22, 2021 Last night, AMD released Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.6.1 that fixes some Radeon Graphics products that were experiencing lower than expected performance in Destiny 2. AMD users may want to change their Settings > Preferred Software Version to Recommended + Optional for future updates.

June 3, 2021 In our TWaB blog post, we acknowledged that we made some major engine changes with the launch of Beyond Light - while working from home. Due to the pandemic, we haven't had access to our PC compatibility lab to do in-depth testing. We've been making improvements with each release even though they aren't called out in patch notes, and we're working with our partners to help address these issues and are optimistic about the future.

January 29, 2021 We have looked over the data post 3.0.2 launch: -- High-end users saw big improvements: we're about halfway back to pre-Beyond Light perf. -- Mid-range systems didn't see much improvement. -- Low-end and laptops didn't see much improvement. We're continuing to investigate and look for solutions toward better performance.

January 19, 2021 We released Update 3.0.2 that optimized Lighting on PC GPUs to help increase performance. -- Many folks have mentioned turning off the Shader Cache in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Does this help with performance?

December 14, 2020 We believe we found a few issues related to light probes that have led to GPU performance degradation. We're still investigating and hope to have a resolution in January.

Please use this thread to help us track down what is causing the issue by:
1. I only experience fps drops when I am in world. In my menus or in orbit I run 60 fps, but any situation where my Guardian is walking around my frames drop to 15. edit for the dxdiag https://pastebin.com/VVJqyHqe

    • This issue has caused me to stop playing this game. Won’t be coming back until it’s fixed. This doesn’t mean I won’t check on this issue regularly. Hopefully this gets fixed. I’m disappointed that I wasted money on this game.

      • Same as everyone else, getting constant frame stutter doing literally anything in the game. There doesn't seem to be any kind of pattern to it. i7-8700k @4.9 ghz (have been running the same overclock for the past year without any performance issues). RTX 3080 32 gigs 3200 mhz ram nvme ssd I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics driver, no result. Please fix your game, these frame stutter is absolutely unacceptable.

      • Are you joking with these ridiculous "suggestions"? The ONLY THING that changed was YOUR GAME, why would MY SETTINGS be the problem. The game was running perfectly fine, you updated it, now it doesn't run fine anymore, how is that in any way related to MY SETTINGS?? The lighting changes in the locations is almost certainly the cause of the frame loss here. Instead of posting nonsense, get your developers to triage it properly and optimize the graphical changes that were made for Beyond Light. Outsource it if you have to.

As others said, massive FPS drops in Tangled Shore. 55-65 FPS range in open world, GPU usage is in 50-70% range, GPU clocks are also in 50-75% range of max clocks, never saw that in any other game, like CoD: MW, CoD: BOCW, Forza Horizon 4, Siege. Never saw any problems before Beyond Light. Now I can play PVP only, but not that much FPS there also, sometimes drops below 100 FPS to 80-70. CPU: Ryzen 9 3900X GPU: Radeon RX 5700 XT, Latest Drivers RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz Game on: Corsair MP510 nVME SSD Edit: Same issues after clean Windows 10 install

          • Same issue here. Massive drops in frame-rate in general, but times where the frames will drop even more and cause the game to lag. Game ran perfectly fine for me prior to Beyond Light. Hardware and DXDIAG for my system are irrelevant as anyone can see running through these replies that even people with extremely high-end hardware are having these issues. So obviously, it's not a hardware problem - it's the software, i.e. the game engine is busted.

          • PC SPECS: cpu: 5600x gpu: 5700xt Issues: The Tangled Shored is Utterly Broken performance wise. I get 1/2 fps anywhere on world, and it's a laggy, messy experience. The gpu doesn't even clock up properly, like it's trying to run the game from cpu and the gpu at 120mhz. This is a repeatable, unending issue that makes hunts completely laborious endeavors to deal with. The seasonal event is essentially broken right now - which I paid money for. General low fps since beyond light: The game is running poorly in any areas requiring shooting of enemies, and completely tanks when many are on screen. I get dips into the low 40s routinely for extended periods of time, even with everything set to low/lowest, at 720p. Somehow either driver wise or engine wise, the beyond light update broke the game on pc.

          • Ok that's it, something has to be done here and it's clear Bungo won't lift a finger for us. My suggestion is to spam everything D2 related with a link to this thread demanding that they at least recognise the problem on TWABs and keep us updated, mainly Bungie's Twitter and every Destiny content creator. If we don't get the word out that this is happening it will die right here on this thread.

          • Are we going to get an update on this issue at all? I have yet to see it in the known issues of the TWAB and there's been no indication that it's being addressed.

Feels like even worse after this update, I have played for a few hours now, in Shore I have had even worse performance now, public events are below 40fps for me, playing on lowest settings, this feels sad, while every other game I have (Cold War CoD, Apex, R6:Siege...) are working flawlessly... my build is still the same: I7 7700K RX 5700 XT 32gb of RAM @3200 everything is at stock speeds. • Pastebin here https://pastebin.com/09T4RFvQ CPU: AMD RX 3900X GPU: AMD RX 5700 XT Liquid Devil MB: GB Aurous X570 Master Ram: 64GB G Skil Trident Neo CPU, Chipset, GPU all water cooled on a dual radiator open loop. Temps never exceed 55c at MAX on both the CPU and GPU after gaming for several hours. I used to have graphics set to High and would get ~110 fps in the tower, ~120-154 (I cap frames to just under my monitor max) in PVE and even PVE. I dialed down the graphics to Med. FOV has stayed at 105, V-Sync has been off since day 1. I've noticed when landing in the Tangled Shore mostly, the frames drop over 50%, usually it's at the spawn point and stops when I reach the entrance to Spiders den or when I go past where the public event / Hollowed Lair entrance is. I haven't been in the dreaming city much. I also notice that when playing in PVP matches, whenever someone from the opposite team gets near me, it's almost like my system "hangs" for a split second and then my frames drop massively. The number is too fast to see with the eye, but it's enough to where I can't react and end up dying before I know what even happened. I don't know if it happens much, if at all, when my own team is near me. Loading in PVP itself also takes ~5 seconds before stuttering stops and I can move through the map. My system was built early this summer and D2 ran fine, minus the crappy V-Sync bug. Since Beyond Light, I've noticed that things look much nicer, but they also have their glitches.

            • Just a quick Q - Has anyone, as a part of their troubleshooting, updated their bios? I know there was an issue with Ryzen CPUs before with Destiny. I'm not brave enough to update my motherboard's BIOS unless I HAVE to, so I was curious whether any more brave souls have checked it out.

https://pastebin.com/cthFihFf When performing properly the game runs between 65 and 75 fps. It will randomly stutter down to as low as 15 fps for a second or two. Happens very often when there are lots of enemies on screen. I'm a newer player, started playing with release of Beyond Light, but didn't purchase expansion until after 2 weeks. Had no issues with frames before purchasing Beyond Light. Occasionally stutters during Gambit matches, stutters very frequently during Crucible. Sometimes the game will run smooth for first hour or two, then will start stuttering, sometimes stuttering starts as soon as I start playing. So far I get the most frame rate drops in the Dreaming City.

It's been almost a month and the problems still persist. Now, I fully understand that these things can be really difficult to fix. And I also know that there are many other issues with the game that need fixing as well. Still, it's very discouraging to see that the PC framerate problems aren't even mentioned in the issues list at the latest TWAB. I believe that something that is severely hurting people's ability to play the game should be treated with a bit more urgency. If it's tough to fix and it will take time, so be it. But please, keep ackowledging it. Right now it feels like you've made this megathread for us to just vent in while ignoring the issue entirely. I surely hope that isn't the case. I've gone from 130+ fps to around 90 on average, with my lowest dips being to the low 70's or high 60's. It's extremely annoying since I play on a high refresh rate display, but at the end of the day I can still play through it. Many other people aren't quite so lucky, people who got by with 60 fps before and who are now dipping to under 40. That is not acceptable in a first person shooter, and those people have literally paid money to have their game become unplayable to them. Please, give us some news. At least confirm that you are still looking into this and that you understand it's a serious matter.

                  • Pre BL I ran the game at 120fps on average. Post BL update my frames have essentially halved, running at around 60. I don't know what bungie have changed to make it it run so much worse, but I can tell you that whatever improvements have been made were not worth this cost to performance, from my perspective. I used to think that bungie could easily put a 120fps performance mode in the next gen console version, now I'm worried the 60fps upgrade will not even maintain a solid 60. I have made no other changes to my pc, the only thing that has changed regarding D2 is the beyond light update.

Hey folks, so I broke down and ran some testing. I have an I7-7700k processor and RTX 2070. I was noticing the stutters and frame dips when beyond light came out. I went through the check list above and turning on vsync solved all the issues I was having. Not saying that will work for you but something on the list above might work. Just take some time and fiddle with the settings. Yes there is probably still a bug causing the issues but at least there is a potential workarounds until it gets fixed. I do not work for bungie and I am not associated to them in any way. I am just a long time fan of their games. Although I wanna talk about some experience I have as a long time developer and SRE for a web based companies. They probably have at least looked and made tickets to resolve these issues but performance issues are hard and not an easy thing to fix. They take a lot of time to understand what is going wrong and how to fix it. You cant rush this or you get it wrong again and make it worse. If you have been following their twitter you can see they have other high priority issues that has disabled things in the game. A team of people can only do so much depending on their size. At the end of the day things that are broken need to be higher priority then performance issues. Because they are down right broken. Yes frame dips are annoying but it does not prevent you from playing the game or a section of the game. Stutters can be a pain too. There are armor pieces they have had to disable. Bungie is handling all things the best they can. You can only test so much before you release something. If you have a smooth big release you found a unicorn. Congratulations. Anyway what I am trying to say is give them some time so they can make this right. DXDIAG: https://pastebin.com/pAnfVegn

                    • Consistently experiencing severe fps drops in all zones since Beyond Light launched. the issues have been the worst in the dreaming city and the EDZ, specifically in Trostland. I run on medium/low settings, excluding textures where I run high. Prior to Beyond Light, these graphics settings would give me a mostly stable 60fps (would drop occasionally to 55-ish when looking at dense zones from extremely long distances) across all zones with a render resolution of 100% at 1080x1920. Since the launch of Beyond Light, my prior settings would result in frames anywhere from 55 when looking at low-traffic areas and skyboxes to as low as 35 in areas like the EDZ and the Dreaming City. Most consistent framerate is around 45-50 fps. I've since cranked render resolution down to 90%, but the game still suffers severe drops and hovers around 50fps at most times. Even when render resolution is set to the minimum, the game still experiences micro stuttering. Tested this with Vsync on and off, made no difference. Even when playing at the lowest possible graphics settings across the board, the game will experience stutters and fps loss.
