[BNG] PC FPS Issues Megathread - UPDATE June 22

Hey, community. We're currently investigating FPS issues on PC.
UPDATES
June 22, 2021 Last night, AMD released Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.6.1 that fixes some Radeon Graphics products that were experiencing lower than expected performance in Destiny 2. AMD users may want to change their Settings > Preferred Software Version to Recommended + Optional for future updates.

June 3, 2021 In our TWaB blog post, we acknowledged that we made some major engine changes with the launch of Beyond Light - while working from home. Due to the pandemic, we haven't had access to our PC compatibility lab to do in-depth testing. We've been making improvements with each release even though they aren't called out in patch notes, and we're working with our partners to help address these issues and are optimistic about the future.

January 29, 2021 We have looked over the data post 3.0.2 launch: -- High-end users saw big improvements: we're about halfway back to pre-Beyond Light perf. -- Mid-range systems didn't see much improvement. -- Low-end and laptops didn't see much improvement. We're continuing to investigate and look for solutions toward better performance.

January 19, 2021 We released Update 3.0.2 that optimized Lighting on PC GPUs to help increase performance. -- Many folks have mentioned turning off the Shader Cache in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Does this help with performance?

December 14, 2020 We believe we found a few issues related to light probes that have led to GPU performance degradation. We're still investigating and hope to have a resolution in January.

Please use this thread to help us track down what is causing the issue by:
1. AMD 5600x with AMD RX 6800 - 32GB DDR4 3800 - SSD Since the last update I'm getting even more stutters and they are worse. FPS drops into single digits/teens, unplayable at times. Tangled shore 50-70fps range where my 3600/2070Super had 120-150fps Not having any issues with any other game I play. Destiny 2 is the only game where my fps dropped when I upgraded my CPU and GPU. 14100 TIME Spy score, this game shouldn't be performing this poorly. Really hope you can figure it out so we can enjoy the game with the proper performance.

  • Oooof. I thought performance was bad before and then i jumped into a game of mayhem. It was a game in progress with supers flying left and right making my game alternative between 3-4 seconds completely frozen and sub 20 fps performance for the first few minutes. After that it was still a choppy 40fps experience. 3800x / 6800xt / 32gb ram

  • You'd think with 22 pages of reports Bungie would actually get their act together so people wouldn't have to play with 10 FPS stutters. But then they'd actually be a company that is able to fix their FUBAR of a game. At this point I have way more faith in CD Projekt Red.

  • *taps mic* Is this thing on? Can Bungie hear us? Please at least acknowledge this issue. Your playerbase with Radeon 5xxx/6xxx GPUs are suffering right now. Countless reports in this thread, on twitter, on reddit, etc. Fire up a test rig with any Radeon 5xxx/6xxx GPU and land at the tangled spider spawn point; there is your reproduction to debug. The lack of response is just shameful. Telling us where you are at with the issue is better than telling us nothing at all.

    • Yes everyone on AMD should try reverting back to 20.4.2 drivers. Worked for me sorta. getting good fps on my 5600xt on high setting 90-120 fps in lots of place around 70-90 fps in problem place like tangled shore and edz but way better than what is was with up-to-date drivers when i was getting 40-60 fps in these problem places on low settings. Did notice lots of artifacts in the shuro chi encounter and still weird lighting stuff going on on europa. Definitely makes the game more playable while we wait for a fix from bungie. Not sure if the people who somehow have 6000 series cards can use 20.4.2 drivers though hopefully this helps some of you guys. Also look up some videos and reddit posts about editing the cvars file for the game as it might also help. Specs ryzen 5 3600 gpu gigabyte 5600 xt gaming oc ram 3600 mhz ssd x370 mb

      • At some point in the last week, the game started freezing for ~0.5 seconds every ~1.5 seconds. It is literally unplayable. Can't do anything during combat, really. Shots miss, I can't dodge enemy fire, it took me 30 minutes just to finish a wrathborne hunt. Crucible is out of the question. I tried every fix, I even reinstalled my PC, redownloaded everything. It's still the same. Game was running just fine before. The freezes happen less often in smaller areas and happen most often in crowded or enemy-filled areas. I have a Radeon RX 480 and Ryzen 7 1700 8-core. Again, game was running just fine before, even after Beyond Light launched. It would be nice to be able to play so I could finish the season pass I paid for (or the three ones after that). I already wasted the weekend trying to fix this. Some communication would be nice.

      • Latest patch did absolutely nothing performance wise with the RX 6900 XT, I'm still having those horrible frame drops practically everywhere, and in Crucible is even worse, which makes me wonder, did you even tested the patch before releasing it claiming that it fix the performance?

      • Somehow this January 19th made the issue worse. The FPS is worse than before and the menu FPS is now bad along with literal second long stutters. My brother has a 6800xt and 5600x. I got beyond light for him when he got his new PC and its so GODDAMN FRUSTRATING that I can’t even play with him. His PC gets 150+ FPS in 1440p Cold War maxed settings. Please fix your damn game I just want to play Destiny with my brother again!!!

AMD put out a new driver 21.1.1 and while it did not resolve the issue it did change the HWinfo64 results. Each run was done running around killing things in Tangled Shore after patch 3.0.2: 21.1.1 Shader Cache Off + DXcache cleared https://imgur.com/gallery/02NMk9q 21.1.1 Shader Cache On https://imgur.com/gallery/A1Bw0gK 21.1.1 Shader Cache On + Multi Threaded Render 1 CVAR edit. https://imgur.com/gallery/WB2J1WM DXDIAG: https://pastebin.com/GikH1Q9n As you can see Shader Cache Off does not seem to help, however editing cvar does. However keep in mind the cvar edit is unusable as a fix as there are horrible flickering textures. There are no issues when I swap only the GPU to an Nvidia 1080, same system (POST 3.0.2)

          • have been experiencing a constant fps drop since the launch of beyond light. particularly bad in the snow regions and especially bad in the new hunt game mode. when i patrol any planet I have a frame rate ranging anywhere form 60 to 90, in any crucible game its around 60 to 70 and in rare cases it'll drop to 40 in some strikes or the new wrathborn hunt. this was never a problem prior to this expansion. i have a more than capable pc setup. -RTX 2060 -Ryzen 7 3700x -game is installed on an ssd ive lowered graphics, changed settings within nvidia control panel, tried literally every fix possible to no avail. ive even tried playing the game on full 140 p graphics and it the same frames..which leads me to believe that the issue isnt on my end.

Still getting super low fps after today's 3.0.2 update. I have a Ryzen 3600x, a RX 6800, 16 GB of 3600mhz ram and a sata SSD. In some areas I can barely break 40 to 50 fps. When I was using my previous 2070 Super I could get twice that. I used the CVAR fix but it causes really bad flickering. I haven't been able to play with friends for weeks. I was the one who recommended getting the game so we can all play. I understand that alot of other people have had similar issues to mines. I just want this documented. As I am very frustrated with these issues. Thanks.

            • Still not fixed with Amd graphics cards as you cannot turn off shader chache. At this point maybe its best to start finding new games for Radeon users.

            • For AMD users, can comfirm that the latest driver 21.1.1 STILL HAVE LOW FPS so don't bother updating.

Patch didn't fix anything for me either. Maybe I got a 2-3 fps increase but that's not that noticeable especially when I'm still sitting below 40 on the Tangled Shore. Edit: Doing a driver uninstall with DDU and using the 20.4.2 driver worked for me greatly. I'm in the 90s on the Tangled Shore (35-40) previously. I don't know if we can post links but just google DDU and follow the instructions. You should reboot into safe mode before running it: hold shift and click restart from the start menu. It will bring you to a blue windows screen with more options. Graphics settings don't impact anything at all. I can min out the render resolution so that I'm looking at an 8 bit game and still only get 35-40 fps. I tried rolling back to the 20.4.2 AMD driver but that didn't work. 5700xt Ryzen 7 3700x 32gb RAM

Ryzen 5 3600 5700xt 32 gb ram Only having issues in D2 (no other games I play having issues) Had the same framerate drop issues for most destinations (40 fps in tangled shore and other areas) as most posting. Also saw a drop in PVP fps of 30-40 frames from what I was getting before beyond light. Reverted back to AMD 20.4.2 driver and FPS back up in tangled shore and destinations (around 100fps+). Pvp back close to normal <----EDIT: No it isn't. Still 30-40 frames low from previous. Had to go back and look at some PVP recordings to confirm. Like others have said this isn't the only game I play, so looks like I will be leaving destiny for a while until this is resolved.

              • Fixed all my low framerate issues on my 5700XT by rolling back to 20.4.2 drivers and Destiny 2 is back and running perfect!!! Hope some other AMD users try this also and it works for them too.

                • The frustrating thing for AMD RX 6XXX series users is that PS5/XBox Series S/X run on the same architecture (RDNA2, albeit a variant), and performance seems to be fine there.

I really hope Bungie you guys can acknowledge there are two issues at hand, both AMD related and Nvidia. Seems much more impactful on the AMD side especially with folks like myself who have 6000 series cards and can't go back to older drivers as a band-aid. As others have put, the only title I experience these issues on is Destiny (post beyond light), and by issues, it's fluctuating frame rates and choppiness that is nowhere near pre Beyond Light. No settings in-game change the fps and there is very low GPU utilization. EDZ and Tangled shore really show the issues at hand. My worry is this will be fixed for Nvidia guys but not AMD and more time will pass and lots will not be able to enjoy the game. The game is completely unplayable and would really appreciate weekly or biweekly updates if it's being worked on for an AMD fix.

                  • Started a new topic: Update Made the Issue Worse Somehow!

                  • Well what ever nasty combo inside the Destiny update 3.0.2 and AMD driver 21.1.1 has brought back my black screen then crash when loading into a planet. And the low percentage it succesfully does load i actually have worse FPS now.

I have three gaming PCs and have been tracking this issue so perhaps I can provide comparisons. HWinfo64 is used to see if GPU and Direct X usage is correct (around 95%). An example of this issue is my 6800XT gets ~40% in tangled shore. Before Update 3.0.2 Zen2+Nvidia 1660 ti = Needed Shader Cache disabled in driver for correct performance. Visuals unaffected. Zen3+Nvidia 1080 = Needed Shader Cache disabled in driver for correct performance. Visuals unaffected. Zen3+AMD 6800XT= Shader Cache disabled via registry DID NOT HELP. cvar edit "force_enable_multi_threaded_render_submit" enabled does provide correct performance. However visuals are horrible. After Update 3.0.2 Zen2+Nvidia 1660 ti = Fixed Zen3+Nvidia 1080 = Fixed Zen3+AMD 6800XT= Shader Cache disabled via registry DID NOT HELP. cvar edit "force_enable_multi_threaded_render_submit" enabled does provide correct performance. However visuals are horrible. So it seems like the issue(s) you fixed in the patch 3.0.2 were the cause(s) for the Nvidia issues, however it does not seem to be the same cause(s) for the AMD issue(s)
