[BNG] PC FPS Issues Megathread - UPDATE June 22

Hey, community. We're currently investigating FPS issues on PC.
UPDATES
June 22, 2021 Last night, AMD released Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.6.1 that fixes some Radeon Graphics products that were experiencing lower than expected performance in Destiny 2. AMD users may want to change their Settings > Preferred Software Version to Recommended + Optional for future updates.

June 3, 2021 In our TWaB blog post, we acknowledged that we made some major engine changes with the launch of Beyond Light - while working from home. Due to the pandemic, we haven't had access to our PC compatibility lab to do in-depth testing. We've been making improvements with each release even though they aren't called out in patch notes, and we're working with our partners to help address these issues and are optimistic about the future.

January 29, 2021 We have looked over the data post 3.0.2 launch: -- High-end users saw big improvements: we're about halfway back to pre-Beyond Light perf. -- Mid-range systems didn't see much improvement. -- Low-end and laptops didn't see much improvement. We're continuing to investigate and look for solutions toward better performance.

January 19, 2021 We released Update 3.0.2 that optimized Lighting on PC GPUs to help increase performance. -- Many folks have mentioned turning off the Shader Cache in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Does this help with performance?

December 14, 2020 We believe we found a few issues related to light probes that have led to GPU performance degradation. We're still investigating and hope to have a resolution in January.

Please use this thread to help us track down what is causing the issue by:
1. I see the update you guys have given for the recent patch about high end users. This may be apparent for some new NVIDIA card owners, but definitely not for new AMD card owners. I have a 6900XT with a 5900X and I have seen no difference in performance. I am getting at times less than 1/3rd the expected fps I should be getting. Whatever it is you are all investigating, please take note about new AMD card compatibility. I am getting frustrated every time I play and want to cry when I play PVP because I am constantly stuttering, lagging, and jumping between 30 and 80-100 fps constantly. The game is massively unstable for new AMD GPUs. I love the game to death but Im starting to lose hope without knowing if it will ever be fixed because we arent getting any updates on the situation :( please fix this, I just started playing again after building my new PC and I just want to enjoy the game again... Please at the very least keep us more updated and let us know that you arent leaving AMD users in the dust... at 1440p ultrawide in Modern Warfare 2019 with ultra settings on I saw between 160-215fps, most of the time in Destiny 2 I get 40-60fps with constant lagging and stuttering :/ so I know its not just a blatant driver issue. Everything is up to date on my system. Forget pvp, sometimes pve is unplayable for me... I know you guys at Bungie are extremely busy with new content, but for a lot of us who have built new PCs with the newer hardware that is irrelevent to us if we can barely even play the game for that content. Not even trying to rag on you guys, I just wish you would all keep us in the loop so we have something to look forward to. I dont want to believe that it will take a whole year to fix this issue like players reported previously with the 5000 series AMD GPUs, I want to have faith and hope but its just so hard right now. Idea: build new PCs with the newer 6000 series AMD and 3000 series NVIDIA cards so you guys can see what we are talking about and then go from there so you can monitor the issue and feel our pain.

In addition to constant stuttering and low FPS even at the lowest settings, my PC started crashing regularly after ~20 mins of play. Stuttering gets worse and then suddenly power goes out, black screen. So in addition of being borderline unplayable, trying to run this game might be actually damaging my hardware. Older drivers don't help, clean reinstall of PC didn't help either. Game was running fine before January. I paid 70€ for this. dxdiag(Czech): https://pastebin.com/3fbcyBJX EDIT: Sorry Bungie, I was in the wrong. Some games didn't display the same issues, but Overwatch did, the exact same. That told me the fault was on my end. Here is the thing that worked for me: I uninstalled the AMD drivers using their cleaner tool, and then let Windows Update find updates. That took care of the driver for me. The stuttering is still present, but rarely, and game doesn't seem to crash anymore. FPS is mostly stable!

I feel for the AMD woes. I had a 6900XT and decided to sell it for a 3080. I doubt Bungie will do anything to fix AMD and Bungie doesn't seem to be a game that AMD wants to be optimized with on the developer end. Friggin sucks but if some of you guys can resell before new GPU launches may be the time to swap.

        • I am sure it's far away from being high end PC, but getting 80-90 FPS @ 1440p at LOW settings in PVP, running on AMD 5900x + RTX3070 + 32GB is a huge disapointment.

          • Hello, after the update I get lots more fps and by only numbers I am at the pre-BL level. But the stuttering is still very much there. Its less noticable on my Ryzen 5800x, but on my 8750h i7 laptop its still a stuttering fest.

          • I have 170-200 FPS average. But the frame skipping and random huge stutters still makes it completely unplayable. I can’t even finish this seasons season pass (I really want to). I am (was) a hardcore With 10k hours+. I have never in my gaming life experienced such bad service in maintaining a game, ever. I’m really disappointed. We were a clan of 10 ppl where 7 of us just quit because of this insanely bad optimization. Can’t believe how they let this game just fall apart. They don’t even realize it’s because of the optimization people are quitting so they keep changing in game stuff instead of fixing the core. So clueless. • Couldn’t care less about low FPS. They just have to fix the stutters and frame skips on high end PCs. It’s unplayable. Until then I’m not playing this shizzle

          • I have a 3070 and an amd 3800x with 16gb of ram. I run the game at the highest settings and get anywhere from 100-150fps with some spikes and lag or stutters. if I change the setting to anything lower the fps doesnt increase very much. im playing at 1080p and im really confused on how the game can run at such low frames even on a semi high end PC. Does anyone have the same-ish performance as I am or am I just trippin at how bad the game runs now?

            •
We have looked over the data post 3.0.2 launch: -- High-end users saw big improvements: we're about halfway back to pre-Beyond Light perf.
Lies, this is bs, NO ONE saw "big improvements" and is not even close! I have a 12C ryzen, Vega 64 and 16GB RAM which is an overkill for this game, should be like it was pre-BL, I got just 5 more fps so instead of 40 there's 45 fps.

              • Adding to the masses, brand new manufacturer direct AMD Radeon 6800 runs perfectly on almost every single other game. Destiny 2, the one game I played from D1 day 1 and I was most excited to play on my new PC setup ( which took months to build especially with this aids GPU market) runs like I'm on windows 95. There is no excuse for this honestly. Like other comments say. if this were any kind of exploit it would be patched in the blink of an eye. This game is unplayable. There is no appeal in an FPS shooter where your FPS drops below 40 while on LOW settings. I changed everything in settings and followed any external fixes and no dice. I can run modern warfare on ultra maximum graphics with 200% res scaling and never dip below 80 fps. Bungie, I have been through some serious hardships with you and this game. I have spent so much time and money and invested in this game, I have defended many shortcomings where most would turn their backs and never come back to play this game. This NEEDS to be fixed. AMD Radeon 6000 series has been out for over 60 days and from what I have read this problem has been present that entire time. This isn't a matter of "high end" vs "low end" system. this is clearly an issue of AMD hardware not being optimized for Destiny 2, not even optimized. before I upgraded I used a Radeon 580 which worked fine. so its not all AMD GPUs its the new important ones that people wait months to buy or pay $900+ for. I waited so long to get my 6800 at retail price and I was so happy to have it UNTIL I PLAYED DESTINY 2! WTF! AMD Ryzen 7 3700x AMD Radeon 6800 32gb Corsair Vengeance RAM

                • Still horrific performance playing D2 AMD Ryzen 5600x w/ RX 6800 GPU 32gb memory, Solid-state NVME drive Not a single other game or application is giving me issues with this setup, only Destiny 2 How long are we supposed to support your game/studio while we can't properly utilize the PC hardware we invested good money into playing your game? How are we supposed to trust that you are actually working on this or have any idea how to fix it when you say the last patch made huge improvements for high-end GPUs and we are all here telling you NO we didn't see improvements? If you want to end PC support just do it already, don't lead us to believe you are trying to improve things when you are making it clear that it is not a priority by your inaction and then claim improvements when there are none.

                      • Pretty poor performance from my new 6800, just replaced a 1080Ti. 1080Ti used to get solid 144fps pretty much everywhere before BL, then went down to 80-144 in BL. Got the RX6800 and first load in to game was getting 8fps, which didn't change depending on resolution or graphic quality settings. GPU was being utilised less than 50%, so little the temp was less than 60c and fans didn't even spin up. Eventually it cleared and ran about 60fps. Did a totally fresh install of Windows and re-downloaded D2 fresh, and it's a little better, but still not good enough that a new AMD GPU is running half as well as a nearly 4 year old 1080Ti that's less than half the speed.

                        • Been playing Destiny 2 since last season on XBOX 1 since thats where my buddies play. Thought I would check it out on Steam. With a fresh install of Windows 10, Destiny 2 and Radeon video drivers. A 12 Core Xeon, 64GB ram, Samsung EVO 1 TB SSD, Vega 56 8GB. Yes, I know its a couple years old but figured it should get 60 FPS with 1080p and medium settings. I was only getting 30 FPS and drops down to 0 with everything set to low and AA turned off. Freesync helped a bit but it still was unplayable. In space I saw frame rates in the 200's but thats not actually gameplay. On Tangled shore soon as I landed it dropped from 40 to 28FPS and stutters when engaging with enemies. I have the D2 BTL Deluxe version on Xbox which is actually a better playing experience. It may only be 30 FPS max and mediocre graphics but never experienced the game stutter and freezing like this was doing. Thankfully Destiny 2 was free to play on Steam and I will not be buying it for PC.

                        • Once again high end GPUs are trashed with this game, this is my 2nd go round with this BS. I have a 3090 RTX and an amd 5000 series Ryzen all seemed to be going well until this last update. What the hell do you all have against high end GPUs???

                        • 1) Significant performance drops and stuttering in various areas. Can always be reproduced in the Tangled Shore at Thieves' Landing. FPS holds steady in the 40's. During these extreme performance issues, GPU and CPU utilization are both relatively low. This occurs regardless of which power profile is being used for the system; I normally play with the "AMD Ryzen High Performance" power profile. My PC is a Ryzen 9 3950X, Radeon RX 6900 XT, 64GB RAM, with a PCIe Gen 4 NVMe on a fresh Windows 10 installation. Prior GPU on the same system was a GTX 1080, and it had no performance issues in D2. After replacing the GTX 1080 with the RX 6900 XT the performance in D2 dropped significantly. As a last resort in troubleshooting this issue, I formatted all drives and reinstalled Windows 10 prior to reinstalling the game only to see no difference in D2 performance. 2) All other apps and non-necessary background processes are shut down when the issue occurs. Applicable points from the "suggestions" list have been tried with no change in performance. 3) DxDiag: https://pastebin.com/smiALVRK I'd like to note that the drop in performance seems to be similar to a drop in performance seen in CryEngine 3 games when running on AMD GPUs - this drop in performance in CE3 games seems to be related to low GPU utilization during drawcalls having higher zpass and shadows operations. This is purely speculation, but perhaps an issue in AMD's driver is causing the performance issues in both D2 and CE3, and something about higher drawcall operations and some sort of bottleneck occuring during those operations might be a commonality between both CryEngine 3 and Destiny 2's engines. Perhaps Bungie could leverage AMD in some way to help sort this is out, AMD might make a driver adjustment, and more than one game will get fixed. ;)

                          • Bungie, I have played this game since D1 Y1. I have purchased Silver multiple times and have bought every DLC you have released. I cannot explain to you how disappointed I am to see the lack of communication in regards to this subject. This should be addressed as an emergency and if the game needs to come down to fix it then bring it down. You are losing loyal customers to a fluke in your system and its embarrasing. I have enjoyed this game for many years and to see it handled so poorly is a shame. I have nearly replaced my GPU to just play this game but decided against it. You are going to continue to lose revenue and dedicated fans if you cannot get infront of this issue and face it head on. I love what you have made Bungie and it has been apart of my life through lows of breakups and extreme highs of raising a new born. The only thing I ask is that you please.....fix your shit. Sincerely, A Caring Gaurdian
