Be cool if through merely playing the game, our stats increased until maxed out in each category.

If we just max out our stats, that would be kinda broken and defeat the purpose of armor stats. Instead, how about artifact power levels grant tier nodes that you can freely allocate to bolster the stats you want? Like 10 nodes max on your character, and you can put a max of 5 nodes in a particular stat; from there, armor stats would do the rest.
