• Hades is a top down Roguelite. If you aren’t familiar with the term, that means upon dying (or winning, for that matter), you’re sent back to the first level. As a Roguelite (as opposed to Roguelike), you also keep several upgrades & currencies upon being sent back. To keep things fresh, each level is also randomly generated; in Hades’ case, the layout of each room is set & stone, but the order you encounter them in, the enemies within, and the rewards you get for winning are all random. If you’ve never played a Roguelite, that might sound tedious, but I assure you Roguelikes/lites are very fun. The reset & randomized layouts add a lot of replayability, without getting stale, as you try different builds, and grind out uogrades. Hades in particular is packed with a lot of fun & uniqie upgrades and abilities, and the leveling system lets you customize the permanent aspects your build more thoroughly than most other Roguelikes. The game also is a lot more story based than any Roguelike I’ve seen, and it’s a really good story, too! However, one issue most Roguelites face is that since you’re bringing all these upgrades back when you reset, the game gets easier over time, which is not a good difficulty curve. Hades gets around this in perhaps the most clever way I’ve seen; See, there are three deluxe currencies—and by that I don’t mean you pay for them, I mean they’re just harder to get. To obtain them, you have to complete a zone, but you only get one per area per weapon. If you want more, then you have to raise the difficulty. This isn’t just a difficulty slider, though; you pick & choose what specific aspects of the game get harder. Like, maybe you’re fast, real fast, and so you’re confident enough to give yourself a time limit.. Or, maybe that’s just super stressful, and you’d rather raise the amount of enemies you encounter, or raise the prices in the shop. The genius of it is not only is it completely optional for those who just don’t want to deal with it, but difficulty never rises in a way you find frustrating, since you have complete control. The other somewhat clever aspect is how they handle the story. Most Roguelites consider a successful run a complete story. That’s when you see the ending. But not in Hades; each successful run rather gives you a cutscene that advances the story, and it takes about 10 successful runs to “beat” the game. This encourages you to play multiple runs, even after winning, which—while a central part of every Roguelike, I find many of them don’t actually encourage you to do. Tl;dr Fun slashy slashy Roguelite game. You can go on a date with a disembodied Gorgon head. What more do you need to know?

 • Cool. If you wind up enjoying it, I’d also recommend Transistor. Same devs, similar gameplay, but with its own twists, and such. And if you wind up liking the Roguelike elements, like the randomized world and (pseudo) permadeath, but want to see it in a different genre, I can recommend you a lot of those! I play a ton of Roguelikes!
