Part Three “Here we go,” Skye breathed as she tapped a few more keys on her keyboard. “I’ll stay here for a wee bit longer to make sure he didn’t leave behind any more traps, then I’ll be with you all as soon as I can. Remember we’re not trying to kill him, and be careful. Good luck.” The blast doors before each hero slid open, revealing a large and circular room with high ceilings. In the very center was the core, a glass cylinder fifty feet in diameter, elevated on a dais and glowing faintly with blue light. Errol stood before it with a wide stance, alone and without his Atoms by his side. His head whipped around to make eye contact with his enemies as each door opened. For a brief moment, concern grew on his face, only to harden again. He raised his chin in defiance, and held out his hands on either side of himself, as though to challenge his opponents.

  • Ring entered the room quickly as the doors opened, his sword raised in a guard position. He immediately began studying the layout of the room, all while keeping an eye on Errol. "We don't want to fight you, Errol."

  • The room is mostly clear and open. There is no sign of the Atoms anywhere. Errol’s glare drops to Ring’s sword, then back up to his opponent’s face. “So I’ve heard for the thousandth time today. If you don’t want to fight me, then stay out of my way!”

  • "We all do things we don't want to do. Take you for instance, fighting your sister." He cautiously walks towards Errol, keeping an eye on him the whole time.

  • Errol’s stance shifts at Ring’s movement as though expecting him to jump at any moment. One hand a little in front of him and the other a little behind, the disks flash their familiar crimson for an instant. “No, no! I want to do what I need to in order to finish this, and as long as she’s trying to stop me, I have to fight her!” His voice wavers slightly.

  • He stops in his tracks at seeing the defensive motion. He keeps his sword ready, but slowly lowers the tip just enough so that it seems less threatening. "You don't have to, Errol. She's your family, she loves you. You're a dedicated man, dedicated to your plan, I can see that." He watches Errol as they speak, his eyes sizing up the other man, as if studying his soul and intent. "But it seems to me that you are more loyal, dedicated, to your father first. To family."

  • “I don’t have any family!” He yells, burning with frustration and anger. “Skye isn’t really my sister, and the only other family I knew is dead! I have no one left!” Even after the more peaceful gesture, Errol maintains his position. His fingers twitch with anticipation. He seems to be fully expecting a fight, though there is the faintest sign of doubt in him.

  • "It's been said that one does not choose their family. Your father sounded like a good man, from the sound of it one who deserved far better than what he got. But he chose Skye for a reason, he made her a part of your family, and because I believe you are her family--" He takes his sword in one hand and holds it out to his side. He then drops it, causing an annoying clatter to rise from the quivering metal. "I refuse to fight you."

  • Errol watches the sword wordlessly and gives nothing more than a blink as the sound of metal against stone rang through the room. The blank expression on his face reveals how little he expected Ring’s response. His gaze glides up to Dain, to Dally, to Blaze, and finally back to Ring: the ones trying the most to talk him down. The man’s body begins to relax, and he drops his hands to his sides. However, Loot flies into the air with wings unfurled. Errol’s focus snaps in his direction, and he returns to the angered state he started with. He is quick to dodge the green fire that rains down upon him. With the fight he had wanted given to him, his gloves shimmer with red, and he briefly looks back to Ring. A dark shadow spreads across the ground at the ranger’s feet. “Then you will be far easier to deal with!”

  • Ring's expression darkens and his eyes flare in anger as he sees Loot engage Errol just as progress was being made. He grits his teeth and starts to back up. "Blast it, Loot..." Hoping to have time to survey the room before Errol turns to him, the ranger looks around, looking for any technology that might be powering his atoms, or keeping them working.

  •
I meant to say this earlier: I’m sorry I never got back with you for a couple days. I’ve been having some not-so-nice writer’s (roleplayer’s?) block and needed a break from B.net.
There is time, but only a matter of seconds. In that short amount of time, there is nothing in the area that could power the Atoms apart from their being controlled with Errol’s gloves. Unless Chiara manages to find the time to use her nanotech, the only clear hope to disable the Atoms is to damage or remove the gloves off the wielder’s hands. The shadow on the ground grows larger as a large mass of beads block out the light above. There is one body hovering over each hero, waiting for Errol’s signal to crash down upon them at any second. Combined, the amount of Atoms has multiplied sixfold compared to Ring’s very first encounter with Errol.

  •
That's alright, I know the feeling. Sometimes taking a step back can do wonders. That's a big reason why I haven't been as active on site as I normally would either.
Ring looks up at the atoms quickly, then to Errol. He had no time to draw his bow, and even if he did, he had no plans to take up a weapon against Errol after his earlier declaration. So he did the next thing that came into his head. He ran straight for Errol, leaping to tackle him as he got close. It was a desperate ploy, but if he could get close enough, perhaps he could force Errol to call off some of the atoms.

  •
It’s amazing how much effort it can take to form a decent response!
Errol’s eyes widen to see one of his opponents charging for him. He begins to move out of the way, but he is too late. He plants a foot back, able to only barely steady himself at the pressure. The Atoms, having crashed into the ground where Ring once stood, briefly shudder upon their master being distracted; however, they are still active and waiting.

  •
I understand the feeling. Especially if it's because of writer's block. If I get writer's block, sometimes it's not just for the one thing, it's for everything, even responses, that I'm writing.
Ring takes a moment himself to recover his balance after the charge, then thinks quick but hard about what to do next. While still close to Errol, he reaches for his left atom glove, trying to get a good hold to pull it off.

  •
Agh, it’s so true, though! It can be so difficult to combat, especially if it’s writer’s block for everything. However, it usually happens only when I have a lot going on.
Errol recovers in the same instant and is able to grab at his lift glove with an iron grip before Ring can fully pull it away. Still with his right glove properly on, he directs a portion of the Atoms nearby to shoot out and envelope Ring’s left leg tightly.

  •
Aye, especially combat. Dialogue and combat take the most thought. Dialogue because it's important to the character you are writing, and combat because if it makes no sense then it's not fun for the other (or can get your own character killed).
He jerks his head down to see the atoms wrapping around his leg like a vice. He looked at Errol, locking eyes for a moment before feinting a headbutt. He pulls his head back, moves forward quickly, then halts, hoping to cause a reaction. He then tries to use his atom covered leg to kick at Errol's shin.

  •
Ah, I’m back! Spent the last few days with family, so never got a good chance to check OT. I hope I didn’t make you wait too long... I probably should have let you know what was happening. I couldn’t agree more. The one I think I struggle with the most is dialogue.
Errol returns Ring’s eye contact with a cold glare. He instinctively jerks his head out of what would have been the path of his opponent’s headbutt. However, at the same time, he flicks his right hand to the side. The Atoms tighten around Ring’s leg, preventing him from kicking free, and suddenly pull it out from underneath him.

  •
That's alright! Family time is extremely important.
The ranger falls to the ground as the atoms trip him up. He grunts as he hits the ground with a thud. His quiver makes for especially poor landing material. After a brief moment of recovery, he kicks at Errol's shin from his prone position.

With his face turned away, he fails to respond quickly enough to the move. Errol loses his balance and drops forward to the ground. He props himself up on an elbow, casting his free hand to the side. As a result, an overwhelming wave of Atoms come rolling after Ring, curving to also cut him off from Errol in the process. Skye’s voice sounds from the radio. “Alright, I’m on my way. What’s the situation over there?”

  • Ring's eyes widen slightly at the sight of the atoms and he quickly begins moving himself away from Errol and the defensive atoms. As he quickly gets back up on his feet he turns on his comms. "Things turned South! I'm trying to distract him, but we're having to fight off his atoms."

  • “So... he is intent on fighting through,” Skye replies in disappointment, assuming that he was the one to start the conflict. “I’m almost there. Just hold on for another minute!” The Atoms begin to dive down after the ranger, casting a shadow over the ground that lick at his feet.

  • "I actually don't believe it is his intent--" He grunts as he moves into a roll to avoid the atoms' attack. "--Loot, I don't what came over him, but he attacked Errol. We were making progress and he attacked! It's not over yet though, he almost surrendered, he's not too far gone."

  • The Atoms crash into the ground, leaving a shallow dent in the stone. Another wave comes rushing around the opposite side, moving to cut off an escape. “L-Loot?” Skye echoes faintly in disbelief. “I’ll... I’ll deal with him when this is over. Hopefully he hasn’t completely dropped the plan. Just one more turn and I’m there...”

  • "I don't know what in oblivion he was thinking..." Ringer says, anger evident in his voice. He looks back at the atoms surrounding him and realizes the dangerous position he is in. He then tries to make an escape by jumping over the atoms that had crashed into the ground, hoping they are low enough to get over.

  • The Atoms now below him brush at his boots, just low enough for Ring to leap to the other side. As he does, the wave closing in crashes into the mass on the ground, causing them to swirl together and get in each other’s way. Then, suddenly, every single Atom in the room drops lifelessly, sounding almost like the shatter of glass. Errol can be seen with a blue arrow imbedded in his upper right arm, grabbing Skye’s wrists before her two blades could make contact with his gloves. His jaw is clenched in the struggle he is given in facing so many opponents at once. He must have temporarily lost focus all together when the arrow found its mark.

  • The ranger makes use of the pause in Errol's attack to circle around him. He gets behind him and looks for a good opportunity to kick down at his legs, hoping to knock him prone.
