The disconnect is the community managers, they are star struck for streamers and rely on them for carries so they only listen to them

  • Because listening only to the 1% works so well.

  • Tbf, they are listening to the 1% with reach to make their marketing department moist. The reason Bungie caters to streamers is if they keep streamers happy, those streamers broadcast their game to thousands if not millions of viewers and it serves as free advertising. It's unfortunate, however, because the wants of a 9-5 streamer are very different from the wants of an average player who can give the game a few hours a week. Ultimately, Bungie has demonstrated that they don't care if you are satisfied so long as they can convince you to take a chance on the next content release. As soon as they have your money, they can go back to catering only to the players who will serve to sell more copies of the game to uninitiated Twitch viewers.

If Bungie really does use that logic it is flawed.

  • I understand where you're coming from, but it's not that simple. Bare with me for a thought experiment: You are a Twitch viewer looking for something to watch. You're not looking for anything in particular, so you click Browse and see what's popular. You see Destiny 2 in the top games being streamed and decide to check it out. Do you see where I'm going here? You're right that the majority of Destiny streamers' consistent viewers are already players, but streamers keep the game relevant in the wider cultural sphere. And not just streamers, but content creators of all varieties. It's for the same reason that companies encourage fan art even though they are within their legal right to issue cease and desist against any fan art that seeks to profit off their IP. It is better for them to allow fans to sell a few posters because those posters are free marketing. And ultimately, a marketing scheme that costs nothing is 100% successful if it only reaches one person.

All of its biggest streamers left for other games, so if this theoretical person who has no preference is looking by streams that are live they will have to scroll for a really really long time and be interested in a thumbnail of the game. If Bungie makes changes in the game to satisfy the content creators AS PLAYERS and not the average player, they are screwing up. You lose more revenue to many players playing than you do catching the occasional hypothetical bored person. That doesn’t cost nothing. You know who buys fan art of Destiny characters? Destiny players.
