Rome was pretty amazing for its time period and was really good at many things. They were really good at integrating others into their civilization and gaining their technologies such as the aqueducts, sewers and even the gladius which actually originated in Spain. Although it had its faults as well, the government was corrupt most of the time and unstable enough that it turned from a monarchy into a republic and then a empire.
