Errol glared at her hatefully, and they stood in unbearable silence. His fingers twitched in anticipation, and the Atoms jerked in response. Skye’s muscles tensed, waiting patiently, hoping that he would realize that he was wrong. But it soon became clear that he refused to change course. He threw his hand out, and a wave of Atoms came tumbling towards her. With practiced speed she was ready to dodge out of their way and slip on her helmet as they smashed into a wall. Their pressure caused it to crack and rubble to fall. She drew out her bow, and with a quick twist it split and transformed into twin battle-ready daggers. Then an all too familiar feeling crept up on her. A worry, a fear, a panic, the very same that she felt right before Lyle died and she let herself forget her training, and she couldn’t restrain it. The Atoms pulled away from the wall, and by their wielder’s command they chased after her again, bumping into the machine and leaving a large dent in its frame. She turned to flee, but there was nowhere to go. As she leapt to the side to avoid another attack, she glanced down at her vambraces. It was now or never, though this was not the field test that she had wanted. She raised them up and tapped them together. Errol stood dumbfounded as she blinked completely out of sight. He heard swift footsteps approaching him, followed by the feeling of two invisible fists punching into either side of his face one after the other. He stumbled backwards and into the machine, and his elbow unintentionally pushed against a lever. The control panel suddenly lit up, though he paid little attention to it as Skye reappeared in front of him. She made a move to stab an exposed glove, but in her fear she hesitated, and thus allowed him just enough time to recover. He lifted his hand to grab her wrist before her blade could make contact, and repeated the block as she attempted to use her other. Their struggle continued for what seemed like forever, though only minutes had passed. In the process, the Atoms smashed into the lights on the ceiling, leaving the room lit only by the dim glow radiating from the machine. It was difficult for Skye to get around the new weapon, and every time she found an opening, she felt her panic hold her back. She couldn’t stand the thought of hurting him, even in self defense, until finally she once again left herself open for a blow. The Atoms pushed her forcefully towards the machine, and with a firm grasp still on her daggers, she instinctively reached out to steady herself. Her arm fell upon the control panel, pressing in buttons and flipping switches. The mechanism suddenly began to hum and rattle, but before Skye could react to it, she felt the Atoms wrap around her body, and she knew it was over. As they grabbed her, they punched through the panel, and golden sparks were flung in all directions. With a swipe of Errol’s hands, they threw her into one of the room’s recesses, and she hit a steel-covered wall head first. She fell onto the platform limply, and her daggers clinked against the glass. Errol watched her intently, and she didn’t move to rise again. She was still alive, but she was left unconscious. He slowly began to approach to finish her when a distorted computerized voice rang from the machine. “U-u-unit prepared. Destin-in-ination: Offtopic. Tel-tel-tel-teleportation in three sec-sec-seconds.” Errol’s eyes widened at the words, and he rushed towards Skye, his Atoms following close beside him. Then the platform shone a brilliant white light, and the voice sounded again. “Teleporting…” “No!” However, before he could reach her, the light flashed, and the room went dark. The laboratory was left in eerie silence, once more devoid of life. The two had completely vanished, and a day later Skye woke in a strange land with nothing but her bow, her armor, a headache, and fragmented memories.
