Wow. Those are some huge numbers. I've done a very little work as a statistician and I'd love to know more about what the spike in players is usually like for Iron Banner... if the player numbers stay up for an extended period now that we're in CBMM... just to understand better what the community is like and wants. I suppose Bungie would have to release those stats themselves? Do you know if there's any way to track player numbers? Does DestinyTracker do that? I've tried to use it a couple times before, but I find the layout a bit tricky to navigate through if you don't already know where everything is.

There's no reliable, verifiable way to track numbers other than on Steam. The other places track limited populations or work off the Bungie api... which has been accused of being less than reliable. No one has ever shown any proof of that but it is widely believed by a small part of the community with a certain specific mindset. There are other reasons participation in this IB may be unusually high. It's the first one of the season and, as always, rewards Pinnacle Loot. A better reason is that the Seasonal quest has been made much easier to complete, addressing major complaints. Also because of the new quest structure it's possible to get access to armor and turn in tokens without completing the quest at all. Finally, the quest is now account wide, so it will reward the two specific weapons (new perks) across all 3 characters with one completion. So I'm sure there are some people coming back to IB for the cbmm, but I'm guessing the changes to the quest structure are at least as responsible for the triumphant return of Iron Banner.
