Power creep can be summed as this: You start out weak, and get stronger. New content comes, and you get only stronger, but enemies don't pose much more of a challenge than they did before. More content comes, you get even stronger and more power, but because enemies don't scale like you do, they are weaker. The best way to represent this in Destiny was Forsaken and the entire year up to Shadowkeep. We had absurd power creep. Well of Radiance, sniper buffs, grenade launcher buffs, bosses were getting shredded and we were practically immortal by the time Opulence rolled around. Even the heroic Menagerie basically depended on cheesing guardians to achieve any form of difficulty, in the form of strong enemies and mechanics that required high risks. And even then, people found ways to solo it by the end of the season. Basically, power creep causes the game to be in a state where the players are always too strong and new content is not challenging enough or has to be made absurdly difficult in order to stop players from burning though content.

  • Ok so, how does re releasing weapons change any of that?

People say re release as if Bungie is going to exclusively re release weapons in the future. And the main concern and main weapons that fueled power creep were pinnacle weapons, like Recluse and Mountain top and Revoker. And in classic fashion, people forget that Bungie already re released weapons but you all seem fine with it until now. You know, Old Fashioned, Last Hope, some of the faction weapons. All re released, but the stats were not changed. The main concern is that Bungie cannot make more gear that is better than say, Spare Rations. People seem to think "Well obviously Bungie should just make gear that is better". Okay, so people want a new Spare Rations, but with better stats and a better perk pool? That's power creep. What is better for Bungie to do is re release old weapons that are alternative options to Spare Rations, such as Dire Promise, and make new alternatives, in the form of new weapons. Bungie can't just "make better gear worth chasing". Currently, if next season we get a new Spare Rations but the perks or stats weren't better or different enough to justify grinding for it, no one would bother trying to get it. That's the situation Bungie is in. Right now, Bungie has no reason to make new gear or reintroduce old gear if people wouldn't grind for it because the new stuff wasn't better than old stuff. The only reason people would grind would be if it was better than their current gear. And they would only do it each season, if gear was better each season. And that's called power creep. Sunsetting prevents power creep by ensuring that weapons that have been too strong in the past, the pinnacle weapons, can stay strong, or as strong as they currently are, without remaining relevant in the current endgame content such as Trials or GM nightfall or other seasonal, pinnacle content. Gear has been sunset in the past in D1 when TTK came out, and no one threw a fit. But now people are for some reason, because they have been spoiled in power for so long and are power drunk and are scared to lose it. Seriously, Destiny isn't the hardest looter shooter out there and people are crying in it. The only real opponents are RNG and time. And the new engram system is made to curb RNG. Bungie knows that time is more valuable, and the new engrams are focused on reducing the strain of a grind. Instead of trying to help push Bungie in the right direction with sunsetting and suggesting things that would be more player friendly in the process, people are just pushing back because elitist Youtubers are making everyone brainless and thinking that sunsetting is the end of the world. Really makes me think that Destiny is the first looter shooter and rpg anyone has ever played. They have no clue how hard or unforgiving grinds in other games can be. Destiny is honestly a cake walk by rpg standards.
