Sounds like throttled network traffic, latency. Whats the status of your internet connection?

  • I am wireless and the best way of describing it is inconsistent, sometimes it’s absolutely perfect 100% connection and 40-50ms latency, other times it can be a lot worse and at the time this happened I was getting the “contacting servers” message on and off

The 40-50ms you mentioned (I assume from console network test) only gives you a ping to their local servers (PSN, XBL). This game runs on pier-to-pier networking, unless you're running a network snooping program through your PC or advanced router then you've no idea what ping you're getting to other players. Its not just your connection that matters, all you can do is optimise your own. Wifi is not good for games like Destiny that require a persistent connection as its too vulnerable to interference from electrical devices, metal structures (like studs and frames in some walls), microwaves, radio waves, electro-magnetic fields, human bodies! I know its not always possible but if you have the option then try using an ethernet cable. Router setup can also be important, do you know what portforwarding is? Its a way of helping the connection for specific services or devices to get where they're going without obstruction. Check out Portforward.com, they have guides for almost every router in the world to configure for almost every game and service there is. It seems scary but its not that difficult. Some Internet Service Providers can set it up for you if you call and ask. (I used to do it when I worked for AT&T). Bungie's networking article Run some tests from a PC if you can, specifically ping and latency (dropped packets). If you test your speed, do it a few times, different times of day, different days etc. as this can give you an idea of how erratic your connection may be. Call your ISP anyway, tell them your connection is unreliable and ask them to run tests. Do you know if your external cables are underground or hang from your roof to pylons? Sometimes those cables crack with all that swaying in the wind. You won't notice when just browsing the internet or watching Youtube, but games like Destiny need more stability. Try to limit other network traffic. I know you probably can't ban everyone in your house from using the Internet when you're gaming but if you're a fan of torrenting, don't do it when you play! Thats the basics, if you need any more help you can ask but I don't really play anymore so I'm not on here often, google the stuff above and educate yourself. Good luck buddy, I hope you can improve things a little. I kinda think this game sucks now but if you still enjoy it then make the most out of it.
