p2p connections. When you join pvp you are loading your connection with 6-12 other connections.

Well, sort of. On PC, networking now goes through Steam servers, since Bungie changed to using Steam sockets. So, you no longer connect directly to other players. This means the only thing you have to care about is how fast and reliable your connection to the Steam servers is.
