But it actually isn’t confirmed wether or not someone has to be dead to become a Nightmare. Several of the Nighmares are characters we never saw who could still be alive. Taniks could still be alive lol And a phantasm of Toland appeared to Eris, which makes things tricky because Toland technically died but still isn’t dead.
